I am jazz pianist and composer. A master of spontaneous jazz improvisation piano principles and a modern performer, teacher, and composer. I am the author of The Theory of Harmony of Music which for the first time simply and comprehensively explains the laws and principles of creating musical works of any genre, style, and time period with preciseness. Stated simply, I created a theory that explains everything in music, not just my own style of improvisation. Since 1993, while studying piano at the Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine, I worked as a concertmaster in the Kyiv State Choir Band named Revutsky, and a piano teacher at the School of Arts. From the time I began my studies at the R. Glier Kyiv Municipal Academy of Music in 1989, and through the present time, I continues to lead musical groups which perform my compositions. After graduating from the Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine, I have participated in various festivals and concerts, including: “Leopolis Jazz Fest”, “FROM-TO”, "Cracow Scarby", “Rock-bulava” etc. Most recently, I served as a teacher in the Department of General and Specialized Piano at the Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine, teaching classics and jazz. I was the only teacher in the Academy who teaches improvisation. I have also written and published scientific articles, including "Theory of Music Harmony,” “Technique of Piano Performance,” “What is the Blues,” and “What is Jazz”. I give master classes on music harmony and improvisation principles globally and teach in Russian, English, and French.
I have over 25 years of teaching experience with children and adults. My method is the shortest way to free playing piano, I can teach to play classic, jazz, rock and to know harmony of music for both beginners and advanced piano players. I worked in different music schools in Ukraine as well as in internationally renowned Tchaikovsky Music Academy in the Department of General and Specialized Piano teaching classics and jazz. Now I teach children and adults in NY Music schools and give private piano lessons.
As the author of this novel concept in the field of harmonization, Mr. Maksym R. has made unique discoveries in instrumental playing principles. For example, he teaches musicians to create spontaneously, and in diverse ways on the piano, often using innovative harmonic solutions. Furthermore, as a researcher in the field of piano improvisation, Mr. Maksym R. has developed a virtuoso performance technique that does not require warming up the fingers, or getting used to an unfamiliar keyboard, which allows the musician to always be at peak performing condition. Mr. Maksym R's discoveries in the field of music harmony and his unique principles provide musicians with the flexibility to expand their performance capabilities.
As a master of improvisation, author of the theory of harmony of music, composer, concert musician, I believe that learning to play an instrument by just memorizing musical pieces is not learning how to play an instrument. All the outstanding composers of the past - Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Rachmaninoff - were also brilliant improvisers. They could delight the audience for hours, instantly giving birth to musical ideas on the instrument that came spontaneously. This fact alone is enough to understand the importance of the ability to master improvisation for free expression on the instrument, exquisite technique, light and bright composer's thought, full knowledge of harmony in practice. My methodology is based on a complete practical knowledge of harmony and the laws of improvisation. From the very first lesson, the student begins to easily understand the logic of music harmony and the principles of spontaneous expression of thoughts on the instrument. For teaching classical works, the process of sight-reading is much more important, which gives, over time, fluency in the text of unfamiliar works, than the long and monotonous memorization of these works.
