2006- Junior Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition
I love working with students of all ages! In 2018, I received my Bachelor's Degree in Music Therapy from Charleston Southern University and have been teaching ever since. I grew up traveling with my older siblings who are all musicians, and we would perform all over for concerts, weddings, social events, churches, and more. As a musician of 23 years, I have loved seeing how music brings people together and am excited to instill a passion for music into the students that I teach, as well as my own children.
I have been teaching over the last 4.5 years, either in my home, traveling, or online, and as well as for a jazz academy. Teaching has shown me that I can inspire my students to enjoy what they are learning, even if it gets hard. It is all worth the practice! I love to see my students succeed and want them to desire to continue play music. I also want to see them having fun during their lessons and be able to motivate them to have fun even while practicing at home. I welcome any student that wants to learn!
If students are beginners, I generally use the Alfred Lesson books which are made for children and adults. These include theory books which I love to teach! Knowing the music theory behind what you're playing is so important and helps the music make much more sense. As a student progresses, I like to have them choose a piece out of selected repertoire so that they may have a say in what they're learning, and so that they will enjoy it all the more. Having my degree in Music Therapy also gives me the freedom to add in those skills I learned in college to help a student better learn or understand a concept.
At the student's first lesson, I do a lot of observing. I like to find out their mobile dexterity, what they may already know about music or their instrument, and go from there. I'll usually decide with the student what their goals and objectives for their instrument will be so that they have something to work towards. As a teacher who is big on encouragement, I use a rewards method. If the student practices the set amount of days and times that we set, and have made progress on their work, they will get a prize, which helps motivate them to keep practicing.
