Overview:
I am a professional violinist and violin teacher serving Fayetteville and its surrounding areas. I received my Master of Music in Violin Performance from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, studying with Fabian Lopez. I received a graduate assistantship, which involved playing in the Graduate Honors Quartet and working as a teaching assistant for undergraduate music courses. I hold a Bachelor of Music degree, with a major in Violin Performance, from Converse College where I studied with Sarah Johnson, a first-generation student of Ivan Galamian. I attended Converse on the Paddison Music Scholarship, a full comprehensive scholarship, and I graduated summa cum laude and received the Distinction in Performance, an honor given to one music student that is awarded unanimously by the music faculty. I regularly play as a section violinist in the North Carolina Symphony and have previously been a section violinist with the Winston-Salem Symphony, Greensboro Symphony, a substitute violinist for the Charlotte Symphony, and was the Principal Second Violin of the Spartanburg Philharmonic Orchestra for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons. I performed as First Violinist in a group with renowned cellist Lynn Harrel during his residency at UNCG in 2018, performing Brahms Clarinet Quintet. I was a featured soloist with the Spartanburg Philharmonic Orchestra in December 2015 and was named the 2015 Presser Scholar in recognition of outstanding achievement as a music major at Converse College. I won the 2013 Greater Anderson Musical Arts Consortium Concerto and the 2013 Converse Symphony Orchestra concerto competition, performing the first and second movements of the Barber Violin Concerto, respectively, with the orchestras. I won the Music Teachers National Association South Carolina State competition in the Young Artist Strings category in 2014 and 2015, going on the compete in the Southern Division competition. I have had the opportunity to study and perform in masterclasses with esteemed artists and pedagogues such as Charles Castleman, Mimi Zweig, Aaron Berofsky, James Lyon, Benjamin Sung, Will Fedkenheuer, Janet Sung, Rebecca McFaul, Jonathan Kramer, Vadim Gluzman, Carolyn Huebl, Amy Schwartz Moretti, Violaine Melancon, Stefani Matsuo (concertmaster of the Cincinatti Symphony Orchestra), and Paul Kantor. I have also worked with members of notable string quartets such as the Penderecki Quartet, the Juilliard Quartet, the Beo Quartet, the Shanghai Quartet, the Borromeo Quartet, and the Fry Street Quartet. I received a full scholarship to attend the 2014 Brevard Music Center Festival, performing in the Brevard Music Center Orchestra side by side with renowned concertmasters and musicians Bill Preucil, David Kim, Noah Bendix-Bagley, and accompanying world renowned soloists, most notably Itzhak Perlman. In the summer of 2019, I attended the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC, as a violinist in the Spoleto Festival Orchestra. In addition to my active performing career, I have also kept up an active violin studio, teaching at the Lawson Academy of the Arts in Spartanburg, SC from 2014-2016, and privately out of my home for the past 7 years. I have also led numerous college and high school level violin sectional rehearsals, including violin sectionals for the Senior High School Orchestra at UNCG Summer Music Camp in 2019, where I was a counselor and rehearsal assistant, the UNCG Symphony Orchestra, and the Converse Symphony Orchestra, and working as a regular sectional coach with the Triangle Youth Symphony.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching private lessons during my time at Converse College, over 10 years ago. I taught at the Lawson Academy of the Arts in Spartanburg, SC from 2014-2016, and privately out of my home for the past 7 years. My private students have won spots in All-County and All-State Orchestras and have gone on to study Music Performance in college. I teach students of all ages and playing levels, and I like to emphasize the importance of learning proper technique in my lessons, as building a solid technical foundation gives you the freedom to explore your creativity without the frustration of having to overcome technical barriers on their own. Learning an instrument teaches and reinforces numerous life skills, such as self-discipline, memorization, problem solving, following directions, and self efficiency, and can also be a fantastic outlet to express yourself and explore your creativity.
METHODS USED
I use a variety of different methods and I tailor my curriculum to each individual student, offering you a personalized approach that is unique to your personality and learning style. I teach repertoire from the Suzuki Violin School and Barbara Barber's Solos for Young Violinists, I also like to incorporate other styles if the student is interested, such as fiddle and bluegrass, and even pop and Disney songs. I also use etude and scale books to help build and enhance certain techniques, such as Wolfhart Etudes, Barber Barber Scales for Young Violinist, Carl Flesch Scale System, etc., depending on the level and individual needs of the student.
LESSON STYLE
I like to create a relaxed and welcoming environment, and my students have commented on my approachability and my ability to create a nonjudgemental environment. Private lessons should be a place where students feel comfortable experimenting with what they have learned and being open to always learning new things without the fear of making a mistake. I help my students build a strong technical foundation so they have the freedom to express their creativity and play the songs that they have dreamed of playing, without any technical setbacks getting in their way. Learning an instrument is a challenging experience, but should also be fun and rewarding.
