I have been playing the clarinet for over 10 years now and the alto saxophone for 8 years. I have loved band for a long time and am currently studying to be a music teacher with a band emphasis at BYU. Teaching is something that brings me great joy and I love to watch as students progress and gain that same joy. I have experience teaching in small settings through school, both high school and college. I am currently the clarinet assistant at a middle school honor band and have taught private lessons on saxophone before as well.
My musical teaching goes back to high school, when I was the section leader in marching band on clarinet and the saxophone section leader in jazz band. I lead sectionals and helped those in my section learn the music and improve as players. I tried to make the sectional time as effective as possible, as we usually only had about 30 minutes. But I also believe in having fun while you work-if it's not fun, then something needs to change because music should be fun! In high school I also taught private lessons on saxophone which was a great challenge. In college, I have been helping out with the clarinet players of a middle school honor band and have loved being able to get back to basics with the students.
Like I mentioned above, I believe in having fun. You should be having as much fun as you are working hard. I have had more fun in band than almost anything else in my life. I have developed lasting friendships and memories that I will cherish forever. When it comes to teaching, I want students to know how to listen and use their ears. I like to teach by sound and feel before notation. This way, students can have a firm knowledge and playing ability before they ever get concerned with notes on a page.
I always want to put the needs of the student first. I want to teach according to what they need or want and make sure they understand what they are doing and why they are doing it. I like to play along with the students because I want them to hear what more experienced players sound like too. I believe it's important to be able to play on your own as well, but I played with my private teachers and it helped me so much to hear them and then copy what they were doing. Above all, the student should be a musician because they want to and they love it. My greatest desire is to help them foster that love!
Of all the music teachers we have worked with, Mandy is our favorite. A down to earth gal with a passion for music, Mandy connects well with my introverted kid, draws him out and motivates him to work.
