Asha is a 29 year old vocal artist whose obvious passion for music is only paralleled by a love of nurturing people and their abilities. A former Howard University music student, Asha channels their knowledge of Black American musical traditions and fuses it with their obsession with artistic expansion. Introducing and harnessing the power of music in the heart and minds of children and adults is the most important thing to Asha. Students should be prepared to gain a holistic understanding of music's power by way of history, context, physiology and emotion.
2014-Girls Rock! Chicago-Beginner’s Guitar Instructor/Intermediate Band Coach 2013-Howard University Concert Choir, Section Leader 2012-2013- SASSY, Howard University Vocal Jazz Group, 1st Soprano, Section Leader Private Instruction, Vocal Coaching: 2 years for Independent artists of various genres My experience as a teacher is less formal than most, I began consulting my fellow Chicago musicians on their vocal placement, their breath control and annunciation in the studio. However, after an experience teaching young artists with Girls Rock! Chicago, I was able to gain the ability to connect with beginners and those with raw talent and little training. Who doesn't love to mold and refine talent!
My teaching methods are individualized based on the goal of each student. If they are younger, I am more than happy with speak with their parents on what they'd like to see (or hear) from their child's practice. Depending on the style of the talent, I find it most beneficial to draw from the artists they most look up to and want to emulate. With the student, I identify the style and techniques that their idol exhibits and together we forge through a game plan. I find this engages the student at any level, because they can always refer to their models for motivation!
For all students, it is of the utmost importance that their own individual style and voice is developed and nurtured. There is nothing more frustrating than learning all the technical phrases, terms and techniques and have very little inner voice. Many leave their practice feeling vacant of true meaning and artistry. What sets real singers apart from others is their uniqueness and passion for releasing their truth. I venture, with every lesson, to uncover that artistic truth within and help the student grow to let it out!
