Overview:
I have enjoyed a long and successful career in music and music education. I have performed at over 2000 events, taught students of all ages along the way, and also have taught flute and music theory at the college level. I am semi-retired now, and enjoy playing first flute in a symphonic wind ensemble, playing wedding ceremonies with a harpist, pianist, or acoustic guitarist, as well playing in a jazz quartet. Once the music is in you, it's in you forever, I guess. All of this practical experience plays a huge role in the ability to teach and communicate effectively.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience goes back to my high school days when I taught flute, clarinet, and saxophone to beginning students. I "taught" my way through music college at a busy studio in the Philadelphia area, and always had a waiting list - from novice, to intermediate and advanced, to adult students. Upon graduation, I was hired by the college to teach flute, saxophone, and music theory, which I did for over 10 years, in conjunction with a busy performance schedule. Just as their is an art to performing, there is an art to teaching - getting to know each student and finding just the right balance that only comes with experience, true caring, and impeccable instinct.Teaching at all levels, from novice to college, has taught me so very much about how to individualize each student, and help them get the most from each and every lesson.
METHODS USED
Putting a label on any student, and/or compartmentalizing students is the last thing I would ever do. There are a couple of good method books, but introducing appropriate solo repertoire as early as possible creates a sense of self accomplishment, and so I normally follow my teaching instincts to know exactly the best time to bring this into the picture. I am a careful listener, and compassionate teacher who really cares. I have also enjoyed good success with adult students who are either returning to playing an instrument, or are at that time in their life when playing an instrument adds joy. I did not put evenings or weekends in my schedule, but will consider if that is the only available time(s).
LESSON STYLE
There are so many cliches regarding teaching style. In my opinion, the bottom line is a teacher who communicates concepts simply, is very caring, and has the performing and teaching experience to base that on will inspire a lot more success and fulfillment than one who does not. I invite you to take a no risk trial lesson, meet me, interview me, let me know what you are looking to accomplish, and I humbly but confidently assure you that I will give the basis, and the expertise to help you get wherever it is you want to go musically.
