Hello there! Thank you for reviewing my profile! I'm an enthusiastic and patient instructor who loves to share my musical knowledge with students of all ages and levels. I understand the effort it takes to learn a musical instrument and I'm here to support and help you to succeed. I graduated from Musician's Institute (GIT) in Hollywood, CA majoring in Music Performance & Composition. I've been a working musician since the late 1990's and have traveled up and down the West Coast and across the Southwest US playing Rock, Funk and Jazz Fusion music in various music projects/bands. I also work frequently in the recording studio as a freelance session guitarist playing a variety of different styles from Rock, Blues, Pop, and Latin guitar. I run my own studio called Songsketcher Studio in Austin, TX where I teach students and assist musicians by mixing/producing their own independent recording projects.
I've been teaching out of my studio since 2005 and 8 years ago I began teaching students online using Zoom, Face time and Skype. This has been a wonderful way to connect with aspiring students all over the United States and the world. As a continuing student myself, I'm passionate about guitar instruction, learning new songs, techniques and styles. I encourage a healthy practice routine to gain a solid understanding and love for the instrument. The more you learn about an instrument, the more it becomes a passion, because you are making progress. I will help you with that progress as we move forward in our lessons. A big part of learning is staying curious and focused while having fun! I hope to inspire you and want you to feel comfortable asking me questions about music, styles, techniques or anything else "I'm all ears"!! I have been fortunate to have studied with some wonderful teachers and also wish to pass that knowledge on to you as my student.
My teaching methods are tailored to YOUR playing level and aspirations. If you just want to start learning songs at first, we'll dive into different bands and styles. My teaching curriculum is customized and starts with Musician's Institute's Core Curriculum and includes the MI Essential Concepts series which contains a no-nonsense approach to fundamental techniques. Depending on your playing level, It's a fun way to learn some basics without a deep dive in music theory. As we progress, we will begin to apply musical concepts that will be easy to grasp such as learning short progressions to popular songs and analyzing why they work, this may also include some fretboard knowledge, mapping out notes on the neck, understanding where chords and scales connect, and some fingerboard visualization techniques.
I'll begin by asking about your goals and aspirations to design the curriculum around your playing level. As a beginner student, we may start with left & right hand coordination and instrument positioning, we'll work on motor skills and get started on developing fun practice habits. As we progress, we'll begin to apply concepts in a musical context by learning progressions to popular songs and analyzing why they work. We'll jam, play off of one another and begin to sing what we play. As we advance into soloing, we'll add more information around fretboard knowledge and visualization techniques. I will always explain "why" we are learning something, whether it's a particular technique or topic and "how" we go about accomplishing it. For Intermediate level students, I'll take music theory a little deeper and we'll gain an understanding of different styles and progressions such as the 12-bar (Blues), 1-4-5 (Rock/Pop) and 2-5-1 (Jazz) progressions in popular music along with soloing techniques.
