2023 - NTC Quarter-Finalist
2023 - ITG Orchestra Excerpts Semi-Finalist
I am a passionate and dedicated musician who thrives on sharing my love of music with students and fellow performers. In 2023, I graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a Bachelor of Music in Performance, and I am currently pursuing my Master of Music in Classical Trumpet at the Manhattan School of Music. Performing with collegiate orchestras in the northeast, the Brooklyn Chamber Orchestra, and chamber ensembles in the greater NYC area, has been an incredibly rewarding experience. I have had the honor of performing in esteemed venues and collaborating with talented musicians, all while fostering a deep appreciation for the art of trumpet performance.
I began teaching privately in high school when a family friend had asked me to teach their beginner son music and trumpet. Since then, I have had the opportunity to teach all sorts of people ranging from as young as 6 years old, to 64 years old. Something I prioritize in my teaching is the development of efficient problem-solving skills. This is such an important skill to me because I firmly believe that if a student is unable to learn and discover things without my help as a teacher, then I have effectively taught them nothing. My end-goal is to have the trumpet be a way to love and learn music in a way that can be shared with friends and family.
For all beginning students, I like to start out with buzzing exercises and embouchure technique. This is the most fundamental part of brass playing. Having a strong foundation in creating a sound consistently and efficiently makes learning everything else about brass playing infinitely easier. For this, I use the Arban method book and the "Buzzing Book" by James Thompson. Once these fundamentals start to become comfortable, I like to introduce some simple songs to apply the new techniques to. My "goodie bag" of music is always expanding as I find new songs to transcribe or new books to learn from so I always have music that the student is interested in learning.
I find immense joy in seeing a student discover something new about their instrument. As someone who has taught people with all sorts of learning capacities, I've found that there is no one who can't be motivated through proper goal-setting and progression marking. As part of this, I always recommend a student records their lessons so they can have a consistent marker to show how far they've come. I am a huge believer in teaching and learning with a growth mindset. There is nothing that is impossible when you are able to acknowledge that although you may not be there yet, through hard work and determination, you will get there!
