I have 23 years of teaching experience in a variety of settings. I enjoy working with students of all ages. Music is an international language that has brought me many wonderful life experiences. In addition to classroom and private instruction, I compose my own music. I perform regularly at folk venues and festivals. My classical music training and my love for Broadway have influenced my writing. My musician friends call my genre 'theatrical folk.' I enjoy sharing my knowledge and love of music with my students.
My first music instruction job was at a summer day camp. I was 19. I taught group guitar lessons. I've been teaching private music lessons ever since. I, myself, had wonderful public school music teachers as well as private instruction in piano and voice. I teach my students what I was taught. No matter what kind of music the student wishes to learn, knowledge of music theory must be taught through the materials being studied. Physical as well as musical talent is needed to play any instrument. Good habits for practice must be established in order to save practice time. Skill enhancement can be achieved through supplemental practice books.
There are many preparatory series available for beginning students. I am not particular about which series I work with. Often there are students with previous instructors and I have no trouble picking up where the student left off. I can recommend books or a series as well as supplemental skills practice books. There are many wonderful books that can be easily purchased online. Sheet music is also available online. I can show students where to look for the music they want to learn. Some music is common domain and free of charge. I follow the student's lead on how to proceed with instruction. There are many paths. They all require regular practice.
I am student-oriented teacher. I would like the student to explain their goals to me and we will work as a team to achieve those goals. This involves choosing the music to be studied. I have plenty of ideas for beginners who want help with choosing books. Then as lessons progress, student goals can be plugged I to instruction, no matter what music they are playing or singing. I encourage students to play for family and friends, and participate in music education events. I encourage them to listen to live music when possible and join a performance group in their community.
