ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
Master Degree: The University of Akron, Bachelor Degree: Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico, Doctoral Degree: University of South Carolina
Awards:

USC Columbia, Graduate Teaching Assistant 2014-17

UA, OH, Graduate Teaching Assistant 2011-2014

Overview:
I am a private clarinet instructor in the South Carolina area. I have students in person and online, and I also teach at local universities and perform with local orchestras. I love teaching clarinet to adults and people who are passionate about improving themselves through music. Teaching clarinet motivates me to be the best clarinet teacher and player. I want to inspire my students while maintaining a positive environment for mistakes, encouraging them, and developing all the skills every musician should have available to learn the clarinet.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience includes college and beginner levels and preparing students for All-State auditions nationwide, including successful auditions in Texas, California, South Carolina, and Georgia. I also teach music appreciation and woodwind methods classes at the university level. As a side of teaching, I love performing all kinds of music. I participate and have participated in the section of orchestras, bands, chamber music, and jazz ensembles. As a performer and teacher, I can bring a broad range of experience tailored to your needs.
METHODS USED
I must emphasize fundamentals and repertoire adequate to my students' levels and challenge them to be their best. In that challenge, I make sure that my students are treated with kindness and compassion and with themselves, creating a welcoming environment for mistakes and development. My clarinet studio uses Practice Space to share lesson notes with me and to track practice. I usually work with books and material the student already has, but if you need any other material, I will share the information and where to find it.
LESSON STYLE
I am bilingual, but listening to my students and accommodating their needs is most important to me. I use a diverse list of techniques to help my students understand the terms and fundamentals of the clarinet. I usually work with the equipment the student already has, but if they need any other material, including mouthpieces, reeds, ligatures, or a new clarinet, I will share the information and where to find it. I want you to have the best equipment to improve your skills and feel motivated and comfortable with your tools to express your musical ideas.

Maria teaches me at Lander University in Greenwood, SC. She began teaching me my Freshman year and was the first private lesson I?d ever had. She has taught me so much and continues to motivate me in so many ways each lesson. I am grateful to have the opportunity to continue learning from her! She is understanding and knows how to motivate her students to want to do better. She is an extremely talented musician and you can tell how much passion and love she has for the clarinet.

I took lessons from Maria O for two years in high school. She did a great job of taking me from a high school clarinetist who barely made all state and didn’t want to study music to a scholarship winner and performance major at U of SC. She was very flexible and worked around my busy schedule. Even when I didn’t have much time or focus to dedicate to clarinet, she found small, attainable goal for me to work towards so my playing didn’t stagnate. She pushed me and encouraged me to work hard even when I was struggling with the basics of embouchure. Overall, I highly recommend Maria O. She will take your playing (regardless of where it is) and increase it. But with any teacher, taking lessons is no guarantee of improvement; YOU (yes, you, the person reading this) must take initiate and practice. If you aren’t willing to practice, not even Maria can help you.

Maria has been doing lessons with my 7th grade daughter for 4 months now. I have seen her confidence in her playing abilities increase over this time and she is not as timid when playing new music. My daughter did well on her Region Band tryouts and made the Middle School Alternate Band and was also invited to try out for the Tri-Dac program and was accepted!! Maria makes sure she has practice music to work on outside of the music provided by the school band director and of course scales to practice. My daughter looks forward to her time with Maria and makes sure she practices during the week to be ready for her lesson. We are so happy to have found Maria as a clarinet teacher!!

Maria currently gives my 13 year old daughter private lessons. She is an amazing teacher. While my daughter doesn't get excited about much, she does enjoy having her lessons. I have noticed a difference in how she plays when she's practicing at home. She works great with children. She's very patient and knows how to explain what she's teaching in a way that they'll be able to understand. I highly recommend her to anyone looking to grow their skills.

Maria is a good teacher, she is upbeat and my daughter is enjoying her first time lesson experience and is making good progress as a beginner. This past week Maria had trouble with her internet, but gave us an additional time to help make up for the interrupted internet connection. I hope the connection is better next week.

Maria seems to quickly figure out what I most need to work on. She is very good at seeing and hearing my problem areas, and so far I find her corrections and instructions to be very helpful. Of course, they are hard to actually do :) She is very patient, and ready to help me in my goals of playing jazz clarinet. I only hope I can actually absorb the lessons well.
