My name is Maria B. and I was in Caracas, Venezuela. I came to the USA to pursue my professional studies and I have lived in NYC since 2011. I grew up in a family of musicians and music teachers and I have been teaching since I was 17. I just won 6th prize in the Vinas competition and a Special Zarzuela prize for the best Zarzuela singer and was one of only six winners who sang in the orchestra concert for the winners at Teatro Liceu de Barcelona. I was awarded as Best Musical Actress by HOLA 2020 in the production of El Barbero de Sevilla with New Camerata Opera in the role of Elena. In April 2020 I was to make my debut as Frasquita in Carmen at Rose Theater at Lincoln Center with MasterVoices which was canceled due to COVID19. At Opera Tampa I had my debut singing the title role in Maestro Anton Coppola's Lady Swanwhite, a world premiere. At Manhattan School of Music I received a Bachelor’s in Vocal Performance in 2015 and Juilliard School of Music I received a Master’s degree in Vocal Performance. I am also co-founder of the instagram platform Latina Women in Opera and a Spanish Diction expert at DictionBuddy.com
Aside from being an active opera singer and performer I have had the privilege of being a teacher since I was 17 years old. I started teaching private voice students, choir classes, piano and Music theory. I enjoy helping my students explore all music genres including classical, folk, pop, jazz, rock and R&B. I believe that music is capable of changing lives, teaches discipline, and gives light to the life of any person that experiences it. I believe in bringing out the best in each student, and that every student is different and needs a personalized musical education. I hope to inspire and instill the same love and appreciation I feel for music in my students.
Each students is different and needs a tailored lesson plan and approach. I like getting to know my students musical interests first and from there we start building the lesson. For my piano students depending on the age we start working on familiarizing the student with the instrument and we also choose a book that is appropriate for age and interests. For some students I use Faber, Bastien or Alfred. I love when my students play songs they love, so I often make my own arrangements of those songs to make them approachable for the student. For my voice students, I also follow a similar method. We work on breathing, alexander technique, body awareness, yoga, music theory, solfege and acting. We develop healthy vocal habits and explore different vocal methods depending on student interests. I teach all styles and my focus is to help my students expand and develop their unique voice while staying healthy and having fun.
From all my years of teaching, I have developed useful skills in lesson planning along with creating musical activities and games. I teach people all over the world, which has helped me develop my skills in using Zoom, Live–streaming, and tutorial development. In addition, my teaching style is student-centered and encourages student participation. My students are priority and I practice in my lessons and consider mental health, good habits, positive reinforcement and self-love. I like to remind my students that it is ok to make mistakes and that they're essential for growth and that learning is a journey.
Maria is an excellent teacher! I’ve been taking lessons for about a year and with her help and tailored classes I’ve improve my vocal technique. Her patience and enthusiasm as you improve is very refreshing and motivating.
Maria is kind, has a lot of patience and has all the anatomical knowledge needed to build a singer block by block. She has given me lots of confidence and has provided me with resources to keep growing by myself between lessons. I'm very lucky to having found her!!!
Maria is an incredible teacher and I consider her a mentor and advicer. I feel more empowered about my voice because I know what I'm doing. My technique has an after and before with her. She give us specifict things to work on and the knowledge to understand what's happening, that for me is very important to build a strong vocal technique. Also she has an amazing charisma and attitude in our vocal sessions. She really cares about the student process and when I finished each session I felt more empowered about my process and myself.
Maria is the sweetest, and a great teacher!! I have been studying with her for about a year now and she helped me with not only vocal technique but also mental preparation as a singer. When I am nervous for competitions or stages, she kindly gives me advice to get relaxed and breathe correctly. Her lessons are always super helpful. She gives me specific answers when I ask questions and provides me with vocalizing excercise to solve the problems I have. I can't express enough how happy I am to work with her. I have no doubts that Maria gives you a fantastic experience in lesson and you'll find your REAL voice!!
