Hello! My name is Marina Harris, and I am a professional opera singer from Long Beach. I have been singing professionally for about 15 years now, and my experience is primarily in opera, but I have done recording work in all styles--ranging from jazz to musical theater to choral singing. I have sung with the San Francisco Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Opera Idaho, Carnegie Hall, the Southern Illinois Music Festival, the Staatstheater Karlsruhe, and in Chengdu, China. I also sing in my own rock band called Bones and Teeth, and excel at working with rock and pop vocalists to help them keep a healthy vocal technique. My training throughout the years has also included musical theater, and I love working with musical theater singers to help them find a healthy belting technique that works for them.
I began teaching music in 2006 while still in college, and I have worked at a variety of different music schools and teaching companies, most notably at the University of Southern California. I taught and maintained a small voice studio of my own in New York City for four years before the pandemic forced me back to the west coast to care for my family. I typically work with a wide variety of students with different ages and backgrounds, and I pride myself on offering a holistic and trauma informed approach to the study of voice and singing. Some of my students are professional musicians, some are adults looking to sing for a special occasion or just for fun, and some are kids just beginning music lessons. I work with several pop and rock/metal singers dealing with vocal fatigue or problems, and I consider this my speciality.
For classical and opera singing, I teach a healthy Bel Canto technique rooted in the Italian school of singing. I am also skilled in teaching SOVT style, but I typically avoid it with beginning singers. For musical theater and pop, I teach healthy belting techniques that preserve vocal quality and focus on a connection to the chest and body, alleviating vocal tension. For my guitar students, I teach fingering techniques and basic chords first, and then I focus on giving each student a basic repertoire--several pieces they already know and like to showcase their abilities and track progress. For beginning piano students, I prefer to use the John Thompson books. Please note that I do not teach the Suzuki method. Regardless of method, my focus while teaching is to keep the student engaged and to always give them material to practice that they like to keep them encouraged.
My teaching style is non judgemental, holistic and trauma informed. I focus heavily on making sure my student is truly comfortable and feels safe in their lessons, and in my experience, this is critical to ensure progress and good technique. I take notes during lessons to ensure that goals are set and achieved, and I spend at least two hours a week just brainstorming repertoire and technical exercises for my students based on their needs. I offer a truly bespoke approach to each student, because all students are different, and your lessons should be tailored and unique to you. My personal training in voice was a very one-size-fits-all approach--if I couldn't do something in a certain way that my instructors wanted, I would often disappoint them, or continue to run up against a brick wall in my progress. My approach with my own students is the opposite--I provide my students options in order to achieve something vocally or technically, rather than having only one option. I have also worked with students suffering from vocal fatigue or injury, and I feel that it is crucial in those cases to focus on vocal health and flexibility.
