My name is Mario and I've been drumming for over 10 years. I love music, and sharing that love through teaching how to play is my passion. My heaviest influences are My Chemical Romance, Sublime, and Led Zeppelin. Which is to say, my range covers a wide range of genres. Though I am new to professionally teaching, I've played at various churches throughout my life. As a musician, I understand the frustration of learning a new instrument. But I hope to show my new students that with enough practice and dedication, anyone can play! As a teacher, I too will learn so much from my students, and this will improve my skills even further.
I began learning how to play in middle school, when I was about 13 years old. Guitar Hero & Rock Band became very popular, and it sparked my interest in playing an instrument. I attended a few lessons, but grew disheartened as I didn't grasp some of the fundamentals of playing. However, after playing Rock Band and visualizing the footwork, I immediately made the connection to live playing. Suddenly, playing became more achievable. And finally after years of playing and practicing along to music consistently, I've been able to play at several of my churches throughout my life: First Baptist Church of Kissimmee, The Church of Life in Orlando, and Real Life Church at various locations.
No matter what skill level, the fundamentals are always the same: practice, patience, and practice some more. But the key is patience. For beginner students, patience will be vital for overcoming the independence element of controlling both hands and feet. For intermediate students, patience will be needed to advance their technique with practicing rudiments. And for the advanced students, patience through repetition is crucial to fully unlock their potential. I will teach them to combine previous techniques while mastering syncopation.
My teaching style will be The Bob Ross approach. If the student doesn't feel relaxed, or isn't having fun, then I would have failed as an instructor. I will always remind my students that talent is just passion met with dedication. I will break down the method to the simplest step, then we will repeat that step until that becomes second nature. This will apply to each of the steps, until we go back and add all of the elements together. For instance, for a beginner student, I would start them with learning to keep a beat. Before introducing any hand or footwork, I want them to just learn to keep a beat with verbal counting.
