Jazz Guitar and Composition, Berklee College of Music Music Production and Engineering/Jazz Guitar, Miami Dade Community College
I've been playing guitar for 31 years and been a professional musician and recording/mix engineer for over 23 years. Throughout my career I have taught private guitar and bass lessons to students of all ages and skill levels. Seeing people develop their own style and grow as musicians, is one of the things that brings me the most joy.
After attending Berklee College of Music for jazz guitar and composition, I moved to San Diego and built, owned and operated Black Box Recording Studios. Over the next 8 years, I recorded and produced over 200 different artists in different genres.
I am now in a nationally known touring band and travel much of the year performing across the US and Europe.
My Experience with private guitar instruction began when I was attending the Jazz Program at MDCC. I worked in a small music store and realized that teaching was one of the best ways for me to share my love for music with others. The excitement of seeing someones eyes light up when they figure out a new chord, solo or song was very motivating to continue my teaching career.
Once I moved to Boston to attend Berklee, with limited time I began teaching privately lessons from my home. I since have continued on and off for the last 20 years teaching students of all levels.
I believe music is the universal language and I always try to teach each student as an individual. Instead of just teaching out of a book, I like to teach real world skills that can be used quickly and effectively in any musical situation. Keeping it FUN is my #1 priority!
I like to approach every student in a way that fits their particular goals. I began playing when I was 11 years old and clearly remember the teachers that motivated me. Instead of just having a set curriculum, every lesson was geared towards me and my ability. I always keep that in mind and treat every student on a case by case basis. Music should be fun and exciting, not feel like a chore!
For beginning (child or adult), we'll begin with a very simple set of chord shapes and scales that don't require too much physical dexterity. We will incorporate this into a song that the student can play at their own pace, to begin strengthening their fingers while enjoying themselves.
As the students progress, we will move into more complex chord structures and begin to incorporate basic music theory along with modal scale exercises. Anything we work on will always be taught so the student can apply it to a song or style that they are most interested in.
For more advanced students, we will start by playing some basic progressions to see what level the student is at and where improvements can be made.
We will focus on technique and agility and more in depth music theory. If the student is interested in song writing and development, we will set goals to compose a collection of songs in what ever style the student is most interested in.
Fun and progress are the key!
Playing guitar (or any instrument) should never feel like work. I gear my lessons so that students feel motivated and inspired to keep going. Instead of just practicing a bunch of scales, I will apply our lesson to a song or progression that is fun and matches the particular skill level of each student. We will record ourselves "Jamming" so the student can hear the fits of their labor, as we continue to up the ante.
The end goal is to learn, play and eventually write and record music that the student is proud of. Whether it's their favorite songs by other artists or their own original compositions.
