Overview:
I am a musician, clarinet soloist, orchestral and chamber music performer and teacher, co-founding professor of clarinet and chamber music for El Sistema in Caracas, Venezuela. I have more than 37 years experience in teaching young adults, adolescents and children. I have developed techniques for achieving wonderful results and many of my former students have gone on to work as professionals abroad. Returning to NYC after so many years is exciting and I look forward to passing the torch of knowledge and musicianship on to the next generation of students. I have also taught English to oil company executives as well as to students of all ages. Finally, I have worked as an artistic manager of chamber music groups and individual artists. I was a PMC and director of operations and logistics for successfully introducing a new technology for use in Lake Maracaibo between 2012 thru 2015. It required a three+ month field test and I worked with all the operators, engineers, directors, port and barge workers and performed all the technical and on-site translations when required. I was in charge of all liaison between the national oil company and my company that won the mandate to procure and test the product which was eventually approved and certified in accordance to all API standards. In 2004 I made my acting debut in a television mini-series in Venezuela titled Habla mi Venezuela, portraying the German explorer, geographer and naturalist Alexander von Humboldt. Two years of Pre-College at the Julliard School of Music. After winning a nationwide audition, I won a place to perform for two consecutive summers at the Tanglewood Music Festival of the Boston Symphony. I was the principal clarinetist of the New York Youth Symphony between 1977-1980. Graduated in 1977 from Columbia Grammar and Preparatory School with a High School Diploma followed by three years of Music study at Manhattan School of Music. Subsequently, I won an audition to work with the Caracas Philharmonic in 1980. Since Jan. of 1981, I have lived and worked in Venezuela. I was the principal and solo clarinetist of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Venezuela, the country's oldest and first symphonic orchestra where I was also a board director during six of those years. I also performed, recorded and toured internationally with the Octeto Académico de Caracas.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching clarinet, chamber music, orchestral repertoire with reed adjusting for more than 38 years. I taught privately as a young student during the late 1970's and thru 1980. After arriving in Caracas, Venezuela in 1981, I began teaching immediately and have taught all over the country. I have always conveyed the highest quality and practices for achieving a clear, robust and defined sound emphasizing musical criteria through the art of phrasing. Teaching in a different language although challenging at first, actually improved my vocabulary and overall communcations skills which I have used with hundreds of students from all over Venezuela and abroad. In classes I demonstrate to students the best practice habits and how to manage their time efficiently. I spend time working on the quality of sound, articulation, fluidity, breath support with a large menue of fingerings to help overcome the most difficult passages so that they sound easy and effortless. I encourage my students to audition and apply for competitions, scholarships, festivals and other opportunities to help advance theire careers.
METHODS USED
For most intermediate students I tend to use H. Klosé, C. Baermann, C. Rose in combination with the use of other methods and studies that help enhance the students progress and development in such areas of technical dexterity, phrasing, dynamics, articulation and breath control. For students that need to advance their skills in orchestral repertoire I use the eight volumes of orchestral excerpts from International Music, D. Bonade orchestral excerpts book, three books of F. Thurston orchestral studies in conjunction with those of L. Wiedemann and original orchestral parts when required. I always ask about the students particular interests regarding solo repertoire they would like to play. I usually suggest certain solo works that are most recognized in clarinet repertoire that are frequently required for taking auditions and in competitions. My philosophy in teaching begins with tailoring lessons to the specific needs of each student in order to nurture and develop his or her unique talent. Patience and persistence are among the main ingredients needed to achieve the finest sought after results.
LESSON STYLE
Having taught clarinet and chamber music to young adults, adolescents and children for so many years, I have been able to fine tune my own techniques for tailoring classes to the indivdual needs of each student in a manner that brings out the finest artistic results. Beauty of sound with a solid technical and rhythmic foundation combined with the subjective art of phrasing are always part and parcel of my classes. I enjoy seeing and hearing immediate results with improvement in all aspects of playing the clarinet, striving to motivate my students as much as possible by playing along side with them in their classes when necessary. I maintain a professonal and friendly atmosphere where there is a true sense mutual respect and trust.

I highly recommend Mark F. as a teacher because he has a lot of experience and knowledge with the clarinet’s repertoire and knows how to solve technical problems in a highly professional and efficient way. In my opinion his way of teaching is very accurate and can be used for any other form of performing (as a soloist or with any group of musicians), where he gives you more advanced methods with solutions for practicing to help study and include more repertoire in order to help resolve your problems and improve better traits as a performer. I was one of his students and I'm very pleased with his work.

Excelente profesor. Recomendado!
