"My greatest award in teaching, is the positive impact on students."

"Mark has an easy-going approach with his students, allowing them to pursue specific areas of interest while ensuring that they receive the necessary fundamental instruction.  For my son, that means getting to play classical and jazz pieces that he loves in addition to his scales and other theory exercises.  Mark isn’t tied to a rigid methodology and can easily handle a student like my son who is prone to distraction and can be difficult for some teachers to work with.  My son enjoys Mark’s sense of humor, and has even come to appreciate his attempts to stump him with questions about key signatures and other music theory trivia.  He looks forward to his lesson time each week, which is so important when you have a young student who can easily become bored with practice time and lose interest in music.  At audition time for the jazz ensemble this year, they beat out students with a year’s more experience, and are two of only three alto saxophones who made the cut. Their success is the best reference I can give in recommendation of Mark Lohman and his musical instruction.” E. Griffitt – Blue Springs, MO

“My daughter, Kaylan, decided at the end of fifth grade to play clarinet in middle school band.  Summer band camp was starting in June and my daughter was a little nervous about not knowing anything about the clarinet.  Our first lesson with Mark went very well and each lesson after the sound only got better.  Kaylan is now playing clarinet for the Grain Valley Wind ensemble, she was the only freshman chosen to play in the ensemble this year.  She also takes alto saxophone lessons from Mark.  After only playing the saxophone for less than 3 months, she auditioned for the 8th grade jazz band and was chosen for one of two alto sax positions.  She also played several saxophone solos during her time in 8th grade jazz band in front of fairly large audiences. My intention is not to brag about the achievements of my youngest daughter, but to highlight what I feel is an accomplishment of Mark Lohman’s teaching ability.  He makes learning to play the instrument fun and encourages the student to not give up.  I would definitely recommend Mr. Mark Lohman for private instrumental lessons.  Especially after having to take lessons from another instructor for 3 months because of scheduling conflicts this fall, my daughter is so glad to be back with her favorite instructor.”  K. Rice – Grain Valley, MO

Overview:
I am a passionate, enthusiastic music professional with over 35 years of comprehensive experience in the Fine Arts discipline of Music. I graduated in 1984 from UMKC Conservatory of Music with a Masters Degree in Saxophone performance. Since my earliest days in high school I have played professionally, having unique opportunities to perform with some of the best local bands and musicians found anywhere. My formal saxophone training was with internationally known, Tim Timmons. I also had the opportunity to study jazz theory and improvisation with Los Angeles, studio musician, Gary Foster. In addition to my major study of saxophone, I studied clarinet and flute throughout college.    My professional work includes freelancing and I perform on a regular basis with a R & B show band called Platinum Express, featuring the Full Steam Horns.   I am available for studio session work.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience goes back to 1980. I began teaching private students in a local music studio. During my college years, I was a Graduate Assistant. When I am not private teaching, I am working with students in their school district jazz band programs. All of my students are encouraged to participate in their school band programs and solo contests.
METHODS USED
My approach to coaching students is focused on 5 important areas; embouchure, tone quality, intonation (pitch), technique, and time. Memorization of key signatures and scales are very important to the student's overall success. I utilize a method for memorizing key signatures which will decrease the memorization time and increase retention. The choice of music books and etude studies are based upon the student's level of playing and areas I identify needing improvement. Students who have gained more experience in the fundamentals, will be introduced to concepts of jazz style. This will often include style, ear training, basic theory, and improvisation. Basically, my goal is to help the student realize their own success!
LESSON STYLE
My experiences in a wide range of musical settings energize my goal to develop the interest, enjoyment, and personal achievement of each student through consistent application of fundamentals. I understand each student has their own unique personality and talent to offer. I will work with you to bring that out.
