Playing piano is my greatest reward in life, being able to bring a smile to a face of any age. After graduating from Cal Poly with a concentration in performance and theory, I was musical director of The Great American Melodrama and Vaudeville theater. I was able to broaden my horizons performing, teaching, composing and arranging all different styles of music….and can even play piano upside down now! I was also music director of a local Christian church which has enabled me to become proficient in sacred/praise music as well. I look forward to leading you on a fulfilling musical journey.
I started to teach piano in college, helping other beginning students around me achieve their goals. I slowly worked my way out to the community, teaching students of all ages at local churches in the area. The greatest satisfaction of teaching comes from the happiness and sense of accomplishment a student has when completing a piece for themselves or for their performance in a recital. My students have a well rounded education with playing different styles of music as well as understanding the music theory of what pieces they play.
I begin teaching from piano books published by Alfred. I also have the student learn their scales as well as give a weekly written music theory assignment. I incorporate styles and songs the student enjoys listening to or playing as well. I like to teach classical music. With this foundation, ALL other music is much easier to play, and helps tremendously with their sight reading skills. Performance recitals are recommended, but not required. If requested, ABRSM and CMTA exams are available to the student as well.

My 2nd grader daughter and 5th grader son love learning to play the piano in with Teacher Mark. Teacher Mark is fun loving, passionate about music and great at adapting his teaching style and music genre to individual child. My children can see Teacher Mark's joy playing music and improvising. We highly recommend Teacher Mark!
My son and daughter are both taking Piano lessons with teacher Mark. He comes to our house in the evening for the lessons and the experience has been wonderful. He is a very caring, calm and dedicated teacher. His ability to adapt his teaching style to each of my children has been key in making these sessions a success. He knows how to motivate both of them and find pieces that will be fun/interesting for them. He also teaches a good balance of music theory, technique and musicality. I can't comment to the other teachers but if you are looking for a great teacher for your kids, I would definitely consider teacher Mark.
