I've received my music degree at San Diego City College in 2014 but I have been musical much much longer than that. I played flute and guitar as a child and later began to perform as a singer and guitarist on stage as an adult. I have performed live over 2000 times in church services, for civic organizers, weddings, BBQs, and parties. I delight in sharing an understanding of performance and songwriting with other artists and students and I am currently working on production of 5 of my original songs.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching informally for years and many friends and fellow musicians have noted that I have exceptional facility in chording and singing. I can help any level of student learn a song that makes him or her feel great about playing the guitar for someone. I feel that one of the best and quickest ways to understand the guitar is through learning harmony. Students at any level often struggle with singing and playing at the same time. I like to help people focus on ways to achieve both proficiency on the guitar and the ability to sing along with their performance.
METHODS USED
Depending upon the students goals I like to take the approach of introducing harmony at a point in which that student is proficient on the open chords of the guitar and scales in the first position. If the student chooses to learn classical guitar I would begin with basic exercises in reading and playing from Frederick M Noad's Solo Guitar Paying. If the student prefers to learn some other style or genre, then I would begin to help the student choose and study music that presents an appropriate challenge and an opportunity for the student to build his/her repertoire.
LESSON STYLE
Tracking student progress is key to success. By helping students understand their trajectory in learning I like to have frequent dialogue between student and teacher so that any challenges can be approached with a strategy that the student understands and can appreciate. Identifying the student's goals at the outset of course will guide the particular approach. Essentially my teaching style relies on good communication about what is required to achieve the goals agreed upon. It's important to celebrate and remind students when they have achieved the goal. Setting incremental goals is also part of a rewarding learning experience.
