Overview:
I am a pianist, collaborative pianist, piano teacher, and vocal coach with over 20 years experience working with conservatories, universities, opera companies and music festivals. As a performer I have played solo, symphonic and chamber music repertory in the US and Europe. As I teacher, I have been on the Evening Division Faculty of The Juilliard School for the past nine years, where I teach a course in the preparation of art song and opera. I have taught solo piano, class piano, and/or vocal coaching at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Texas at Austin and Molloy College in New York. Additionally, I have co-created a successful training program for young singers in Colorado, served as music director for theatrical productions, and have served as a judge for numerous competitions in the US.
EXPERIENCE
I have taught music for over 20 years; it is a profession that I love passionately. My students include adult beginners, students ages 7-17, and intermediate and advanced students of all ages. I am drawn to the possibilities teaching presents to discover music together with another person. Each musical soul is unique and that means the teaching process if full of discoveries and wonder at every lesson. While many of my students take piano for personal enjoyment, I am also an experienced college teacher. I have been on the Evening Division faculty of The Juilliard School of Music for the past nine years, where I teach a vocal coaching seminar, and have also held piano teaching and vocal coaching positions at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Texas at Austin and Molloy College.
METHODS USED
I customize the curriculum and repertory for each of my students based on their personal goals, which we will discuss in the first lessons. Do you want to play for yourself or to perform publicly? What kinds of repertory appeal to you and how much time do you have to practice? From there we will create a plan that best meets these goals. For beginners, this will include a method book (I often use Faber Piano Adventures for young beginners and Alfred Adult-In-One methods) to get you started. For all students, I will create an individualized curriculum of technique building exercises and repertory. I will also help you develop your music theory and ear training skills, since these are immensely important in helping you learn and memorize music. I will also work with you on your practice techniques, which is key for meeting your goals.
LESSON STYLE
I find the process of exploring music and finding solutions together with my students to be intensely uplifting and meaningful, since, as mentioned earlier, each musical soul is unique. While I set clear standards of excellence, I am also patient with all levels and abilities. Indeed, teaching beginners (including adults) is a special passion of mine. A typical lesson will include warm-ups, scales, arpeggios and etudes, followed by detailed work on repertory pieces. I view teaching as a collaborative journey--together we will find a path that unleashes your musical creativity and unique voice. To celebrate our work together, I usually program a year-end recital to be performed for family and friends, which is also a great motivator for practice. During this period of COVID-19, I have successfully adapted my teaching for those students wishing to meet online.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
