I am invested in providing music instruction to any who wish to study the art. I specialize in brass instruments, as both of my degrees were in music performance on euphonium. I have had performance experience in a wide array of ensembles from concert band, symphony orchestra, steel band, to brass choir and beyond. I am a licensed music teacher in Ohio, and have experience as a band director. I emphasize both solo and ensemble playing with my students. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others, and passing on music as an art form is something that I like to do very much.
My teaching experience stems back to high school. When I was 14 I was recognized for my talent to help members of the Jr high and beginner band classes. Then when I was attending Miami University, I started my own studio of three high school trombone students; I did that for 2 years. Since then I have taught at dozens of band camps all across Ohio, I have taught in BGSU’s Academy Band from 2017-2018, and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s Youth Wind Ensemble from 2014-2016. Teaching has been a welcome challenge, as it helps me improve as a performer to lead others down the path.
For students at the beginning and intermediate levels on all instruments I use the Rubank Method alongside appropriate solo literature for their ability level. It is a succinct, affordable resource that will not leave a student lacking. When I teach any advanced brass player I use Arban’s conservatory method, Clarke Technical Studies, and the brass gym. Advanced horn players will study Koprasch, and other etude books to fit the student’s unique situation. Advanced trumpet players will study etudes of Brandt, or another composer depending on their needs. Tuba, trombone, and euphonium will study the Bordogni books, Blazhevich books, and other’s depending on their needs. For upper level woodwinds I will use the Advanced rubank. All students in my studio will study solo literature appropriate for their level, and excerpts depending on their goals.
I cater my teaching to the student’s needs as an individual and their goals. I am interested in fostering their inate musical abilities, as well as the musical skills they wish to obtain. If the student is in a school instrumental program, I always defer to the band director as the student spends more time with them. I will take the student’s progress seriously, and expect them to do the same, so I make sure the expectation to practice is clear. I will set reasonable goals for the student, and assist them in getting the tools they need to get the job done.
