I have been playing trumpet and guitar for over 40 years. Currently I am performing jazz standards at local venues in the Boulder / Longmont area. I play and loop together guitar, keyboards, trumpet, and flugelhorn. I have also authored the book "Build Your Chops: Technical Studies for Jazz Improvisation.
Although I love to perform live, I get the greatest enjoyment from seeing my students progress. I have been teaching private lessons for 30 years and have taught music theory and guitar in the public and charter school systems of Colorado and New Mexico for the past 14 years. Many of my former students are now professional musicians!
I first find out what songs and styles of music my students are interested in, then determine what methods are best for my students to fulfill their musical goals. Some students have no experience reading music while others may be quite adept. Many of my students have been absolute beginners and it is a great joy to see them develop their skills and their passion! At all levels, I emphasize music fundamentals and developing the ability to read music (especially for guitarists!).
With 14 years of teaching in the public and charter school systems, I am very experienced in determining the learning styles of my students and finding what works best for their musical education. The most important thing is to enjoy learning and performing music. My students have found that the more they learn, the better they get, and the more fun it is to play music!
