Whether a beginner, intermediate or an Advanced student, we will sight read to get the flavor of the piece, identify the trouble spots and we will discuss how to tackle those trouble lspots. W e have to give attention to skill but we also need to appreciate the beauty of the piece. There are goals the student can establish There will be discussions on the theory, the exercises that support the technique and harmony. The beauty of the piano is the 10 fingers glide across the keys to play more than one note at a time unlike the other instruments which play one note at a time. But to play more than on note at a time, the student must appreciate the art of fingering.
I've taught piano in New York and Pennsylvania for 20 years to more than 50 students. I've played Broadway for Music Man, Little Mary Sunshine, Fantasticks, West Side Story in Harrisburg, Mechanicsburg Area. My overall experience in playing Organ is 50 years along with Christmas musicals, Hymn sings, Gospel fests, etc. In college, I sang in Oratorio group to Vocal Jazz, Wind ensemble, and HandBell choir. Toured with The jazz and HandBell choirs. Prior to teaching I played in recitals some Clementi and Brahms. I also accompaniment a school girls growing in Liverpool, N Y.
I like to select a basic book on fundamentals supplemented with blues, popular, or jazz or seasonal music to Motivate the student. There will be some attention to scales and how chords are built along with other theory as it applies to the pieces they are studying. Some attention is required due to the cycle of fifths and why some keys are selected more than others. I expect the student to review our lesson no less that 4 times a week and not all at once just before the next lesson. We learn to be good musicians little by little over years of work.
I am the best when the student has accomplished and satisfied the lesson's requirements. We can expound on the de tails but if they are not prepared, we will review the previous lesson so they don't miss the value of that lesson. My teaching style can best be described in a sentence: New concepts, new fingering, new harmony, new rhythm, new literature when first you find the letters from Piano Music then unscrambled these single letters until you can spell PIANO MUSIC which is a gift for all ages. Mozart, Schumann, Haydn, Beethoven, even Ray Charles, Prince, and Michael Jackson have patiently and confidently paved the way for YOU!!!!!
