I have been playing guitar since I was 13. I started playing in bands as soon as I could. When I turned 19, I started to pursue my undergrad in classical guitar performance. My major allowed me to delve into many different styles of music such ranging from classical to popular folk music from South America. While doing my undergrad, I did a lot of private teaching on the side where I was introduced to so many other genres of music.
My teaching experience started in 2011 where I started working for a private lesson music studio. There I taught students ranging from the ages 5-60 and taught piano and guitar. I also worked part-time as a music theory and keyboard tutor at a Community College. I met weekly with students who were struggling with these subjects. It was a great a experience and I also got to work on brushing up my theory. My most recent job was being a lead guitar teacher for an after school program. There I taught guitar and piano for a group of 10-15 students.
For beginners, I usually start with the fundamentals of the guitars and it's anatomy. I split my lessons with theory and scales/studies, and then we switch to the students desired repertoire. I like to also add duets and songs or pieces in which me and the student play together, to strengthen the confidence to play with other players. For adults, I start off with basics but move quickly to their desired songs/pieces. Tell me all the music you listen to! I like to get to know my students and I am always open for new suggestions of music.
The most rewarding thing for a teacher is seeing the student progress, does not matter to me if it's perfect! Music takes time and practice and it's very much like a painting. You are not gonna be done in a whole day, you add a little everyday. I only ask my students to set aside 15-30 minutes a day to practice. I am also encouraging to students to learn how to use their practice time effectively. I have my students work on solo and duo repertoire.
