Hi! My name is Martina and I am a classically trained violist. In May of 2013 I received a Master of Music from Roosevelt University, where I studied with Lawrence Neuman of the Chicago Symphony. I received an undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin with Sally Chisholm of the Pro Arte quartet. The only thing I love more than playing viola is sharing the joy of music with others! I've received training on violin and viola and can't wait to start teaching you or your child.
I started teaching in high school, with my very own private students, and coached non-music major ensembles during my undergraduate degree in addition to receiving pedagogy training. As many performers do, I began as a reluctant teacher, but quickly realized that teaching is extremely rewarding and fun! I make sure that the students are enjoying the lessons while pushing them to play as well as they can. I find it difficult to suppress my passion for my instrument and for music, and I think that this rubs off on my students.
I tailor my approach to each student to make sure that: 1.) The student is getting exactly what he/she wants out of the lessons. 2.) The lessons are an appropriate difficulty for the student. 3.) A student's strengths and weaknesses are being addressed with a tailor-made lesson plan and long-term goals Depending on the student's level, I utilize Suzuki materials in a way that is tailored to the childs abilities and needs.
I always seek to cultivate a relationship and atmosphere of trust, and fun, while at the same time maintaining high expectations It's so important to make sure a student looks forward to lessons, and is inspired to practice and prepare.
Martina is patient, knowledgeable, professional and has a sweet disposition. I was able to see improvement in their piano skills after the first lesson. My kids love her and actually look forward to their piano lessons!
I look forward to the lessons because she is knowledgeable and very gentile. If I ask her to play for me (to hear the music played correctly), she quickly shows me how talented she is and how beautiful the violin sounds in her demonstration of correct techniques. She is not pushy, but deliberate and challenging in moving the lessons along. She is a complete package. I am learning of theory and composition for a through understanding of music and my violin. I'll be 57 this year and my dream of playing the violin is coming true, thanks to Martina.
Martina is been teaching my kids, ages 9 and 14 for about six months now.Since from day one,she is been very patient and calm in teaching them.Very knowledgeable and absolutely knows what she is doing. The lesson is at home and what I like her the most is that she is always on time.My sons like her but I think that everybody will like her.Highly recommended.Give her a try and I am sure you will not regret it.She is absolutely for all ages.
Martina has been a great teacher. Our son is 8 and had taken some piano lessons before starting with Martina. She came right in and got him to improve. She does a great job of giving him just enough of a challenge to make him work and learn but not any pieces that are so overwhelming he can't get them. She has helped him through a lot of early music theory so that he not only can play the piano but understands the music he is reading in all of its complexity.
Martina has been teaching our daughter violin since early 2015. Every time our daughter has a lesson she comes away in such a great mood - she really enjoys her lessons! Martina is positive and encouraging and adjusts her teaching to help our daughter learn the best way for her learning needs. We were curious about how online lessons would work, and it turns out that they work really well. The 1:1 time and ability to teach from a distance make it work just as well as in person. We've had moves and schedule changes and Martina has been very flexible for us - which made such a big difference in making violin lessons accessible. Absolutely recommend her!
My son enjoys his viola lesson each week with Martina. She is disciplined in her approach to teaching but always makes my son's learning experience enjoyable. She knows how to challenge him and develop excellent form. Martina is always punctual and professional. We both highly recommend her as an instructor.
My 4-year-old has had several lessons with Martina now, and he has learned a lot. Obviously, it is challenging to teach such a young child, and he has learned quite a lot in a short time, and is very excited to learn about violin and for his lessons. I think Martina is doing an excellent job, is quite patient, and is teaching him in such a way that he can really remember his new skills from week to week. We look forward to many more lessons with Ms. Martina!
