I am passionate about music and love to share my knowledge with my students! In 2018, I graduated from Louisiana Tech University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Vocal Music Education with an emphasis in piano. In 2020, I completed my Master in Music degree in Piano Pedagogy and Performance at Samford University. From 2020-2022, I held a position of Instructor of Piano at University of Louisiana at Monroe where I taught private piano lessons, group piano classes, and piano pedagogy courses. I also enjoyed collaborating with students and faculty in recitals while at ULM. In the fall of 2022, I got married and moved to Vicksburg, MS. I look forward to growing a piano studio here to share my love of music with my students!
I began teaching private piano lessons part-time while in college at Louisiana Tech University. I soon found that teaching piano is where my true passion was. Since then, I have taught all ages and levels. While in graduate school at Samford University, I taught college students private lessons and group piano classes. I also had the opportunity to teach at the music academy where I taught students as young as 4 years old, and I love it all! Each student brings there own challenges and struggles they must overcome. I love to help guide students through challenges in the best way possible. I believe that tailoring what I teach based on what the student wants to learn is very important. Sometimes that means I will incorporate different types of music other than Classical. This will help students stay motivated to keep learning and practicing! My goal is that my students leave lessons equipped with the skills to be successful in their practice sessions during the week and my hope is that they leave feeling inspired and encouraged!
For beginner students who are children, I usually start with Faber Piano Adventures by Hal Leonard, Primer Level (lesson and theory). This will give them a basis of the fundamentals. I might incorporate a few pieces by rote for repertoire to keep their interest! Once they have a good foundation, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire that could be performed at recitals. For adults, I tailor the lessons based off of what they want to learn and depending on what level they are at. If they are a complete beginner and just want to learn to read and have an understanding of music, I will begin them with Faber's Adult Piano Adventures level 1 and go from there. As students progress into the advanced level, I use less method books and mainly focus on repertoire. I teach all scales, arpeggios, and chord progressions to all students for I believe it is important to know this no matter what style of music you are learning!
I believe a students personality plays a big role in how they are motivated to learn and practice. Therefore, I really try to get to know my students so that I can better instruct them and help them attain their goals. I believe in positive reinforcement and try to inspire my students to "try again" when they do make mistakes and encourage them on their progress. My goal is to help my students find the joy in music, not frustration and stress. I do this by setting realistic practice goals each week and by keeping a relaxed atmosphere in each lesson!
