Mary has been playing and studying music over twenty years. She lives in the Philadelphia area, where she freelances and teaches. She received her Master of Music degree from the Music Conservatory of Purchase College in 2011 and her B.A. in music performance from SUNY Geneseo in 2005. Mary has been teaching music for over a decade. She worked for Play On Philly! for seven years Teaching and managing the community engagement performances. She currently works at the Curtis Institute of Music in production.
Mary has primarily studied classical trumpet, but also has training in jazz and world music. She currently plays principal trumpet in the Bravura Philharmonic and occasionally performs with the Philharmonic of Southern New Jersey, Orchestra Society of Philadelphia, and the Garden State Philharmonic. She’s also a member of the Philly Bloco and the Bella Vista Brass Quintet. She’s been involved in many performance groups including but not limited to the Vassar Wind Ensemble, Penn Orchestra, Marsyas Ensemble and numerous Purchase Conservatory ensembles including the symphony orchestra, graduate brass quintet, Latin jazz orchestra, klezmer ensemble, and the new music ensemble.
Mary also teaches beginner piano to all ages.
I like to be flexible to the students’ needs and learning style. I’ve used many method books often going off what the student is already working on for band or in school. If the student is more advanced I will assign method books such as the Arban’s, Clarke, and Charlier books. I also like to incorporate music the student is interested in and wants to learn. I often work on the fundamentals of breath support to create the best sound possible. I will give weekly assignments and create a goal oriented learning environment.
I stay flexible to the individual students' needs. I try to keep the student engaged and ask many questions to help them become their own best teacher. I will give assignments and create goals but also want the student to be self motivated. I will not be overly strict when it comes to practice. I like to have the student approach music with joy and curiosity. I like to keep the learning positive and help the students find their voice within music and find what motivates them intrinsically.
Noah Duffy
A great teacher for students of any age. She is very supportive, encouraging, and patient, and she knows how to push you to your greatest potential. As an eleven-year-old violinist and pianist, she helps me improve my technique for both instruments, as well as teaching me how to play assigned songs (and some of my choosing). She keeps lessons both fun and interesting, and she definitely knows music (and how to teach it)! I always look forward to lessons with Mary!

I love my music lessons with Mary! I'm a 9-year old beginner piano student, and she always teaches me whichever songs I ask her to. She helps me learn the correct hand positions so that I can improve my playing skills. She teaches me fun songs and is very positive. She is very patient as I'm learning.

Mary is a great trumpet teacher! I am 37 years old and a singer/rhythm guitarist. I recently picked up trumpet and Mary was able to quickly identify my skill level and identify what needed work. She gave me some great tips re breath control and exercises to practice, and it really improved my playing! She also helped me draw connections between singing and playing a wind instrument, which it turns out, tie very nicely together. I appreciate that she allows for the student to lead while also providing direction and helping you set goals.
