M.A. Pensacola Christian College, Choral Conducting Performance B.A. Pensacola Christian College, Piano Performance
Overview:
I am an energetic and driven music instructor who loves learning, teaching, and performing! I teach students at a local music school, and direct an A Capella men's group in Pensacola. Music theatre, opera, and conducting are some of my passions. I enjoy using my skills as a pianist to perform in concerts and recitals, and accompany instrumentalists in local competitions. I love to use my vocal skills to instruct choral groups, learn opera and music theatre roles, and provide vocal instruction for anyone wanting to sing. I had the wonderful opportunity of touring the United States with a music group in my college years which greatly enhanced my personal and professional abilities.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience began when I was in high school! I had a studio of 14 students whom I loved working with! Immediately following my college graduation, I acquired a job teaching 15-20 students a week at a private school nearby. I fell in love with the students I was blessed to teach in both private and group lessons. I've enjoyed being exposed to the different teaching method books, as well as educational and fun supplementary materials for recitals, competitions, and parties. I had the opportunity to be an advisee for college-age musicians as well, guiding them as they fine-tuned their skills as music teachers. I enjoy teaching all musical styles to all ages and welcome new opportunities!
METHODS USED
For beginners, I usually begin with the Faber Piano method, or the Full Voice voice method. On the intermediate level, it is important to explore a variety of musical styles so that the student is being exposed to diverse approaches. For advancing students who have mastered the fundamentals of their field, I enjoy choosing repertoire with the students that is challenging and exciting for them. The best motivator for students to enjoy music, in my opinion, is the repertoire they are working on. I've found that students who enjoy stimulating repertoire are the most motivated and successful in their field.
LESSON STYLE
I love seeing students enjoy their music lessons! I typically begin the lesson asking the student how their practice went for them, allowing them to communicate their successes and struggles from the previous week's practice. We then set some attainable goals for the lesson, and the student then shows off whatever they worked on that week. I've found that in an effective lesson, the student spends 50% of the lesson or more actually playing the instrument, rather than spending the whole time listening to instruction. I endeavor to give practical instruction intermittently only when necessary. The student and I end the lesson by reviewing our goals, and I offer tips for successful practice and/or performance and answer any questions the student has about techniques, methods, or the piece itself. Each lesson is unique depending on the needs of the student, but each lesson is energetic, passionate, and practical.
