It really all started back in 1994, in the small town of Mays Landing, NJ when my mother first signed me up for piano lessons with my first teacher Fred Rushmore (a.k.a. Mr. Fred). I studied hard with him for over 10 years when I started accompanying the Oakcrest High School choir under the direction of Charles Bass. I learned a lot about playing with others there ultimately preparing me for my journey ahead in college. In August of 2007 I started my first term of college at Castleton University located in Castleton, VT. There I became an established pianist all around Vermont in local churches, schools, bands and as an accompanist to my fellow students at Castleton University. I graduated in 2011 celebrating the completion with my parents and fellow students. The same year that I graduated from Castleton I met my husband Shawn and after spending a couple years in Vermont we were fortunate to move down to RI where he and I found good jobs, got married and last but not least adopted our beloved dog Cooper. I'm currently working at a Church in Avon, Ma where I am the accompanist to our Church Choir, play the organ and perform piano solos every Sunday. I've continued teaching piano lessons over the years and am happy to say that I am now accepting any and all applicants that have a desire to make incredible beautiful music!
EXPERIENCE
As a teacher, my experience started mainly during my college days. I taught a wide variety of ages starting at 6 years old all the way to 17 year olds. I really started teaching in earnest during the summer of 2012 where I took a job in Michigan as a Piano Teacher Camp Counselor. I taught over 50 kids of all different ages and skill levels improving vastly on the teaching methods I'd already developed. I discovered that I really enjoyed enhancing set piano skills in teenagers, but also liked developing a young musicians mind when first approaching the study.
METHODS USED
I will be the first to admit I don't have a set method for teaching. However that is because I choose different methods based on the student. Every child, adult, teenager, etc learns at a different pace, has a different educational preference and I adjust myself to meet the needs of the student. Some will learn better by ear, others will learn through a traditional study of notes. I prefer my students to work hard but at their own pace and to teach them in a way that's beneficial to them and not myself.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is best referred to as a facilitator. Essentially, I promote self-learning, helping students develop critical thinking skills and retain knowledge that leads to self-actualization. I prefer to guide students by letting them think for themselves, pointing out when mistakes are made but also encouraging them to learn and grow from them. The draw back from this is that it can be a bit time consuming, but I feel that at the end of the day, this helps a student so that eventually they will be able to learn by themselves without a teacher.
