I am an engaged, driven teacher who loves guiding a student's exploration with his/her voice. Performing in Chicago and throughout the US, I enjoy singing with small local companies as well as companies like the MN Opera. I have had the opportunity to perform overseas, as a soloist for The Messiah in London, as well as in Florence. I look forward to using my performance experience to inform lessons.
I have been engaged and interested in teaching and pedagogy since college, and bring that to the forefront in my lessons. In lessons I have taught, I find that letting a student feel free to explore every facet of their voice is key, as exploration leads to breakthroughs! I like to discuss the anatomy of the vocal instrument with a student as well, so they grasp the mechanics that allow them to sing.
Generally, I like to discuss what kind of music the students are interested in studying first. Then, after vocalizing and assessing the voice, I'll start the students with English art songs or 24 Italian Songs & Arias, or some classic music theater repertoire. From there, the student and I will assess what best fits the student's interest.
I emphasize with students that the goal is to find their own unique voice, and not an imitation of another singer or a more mature sound than their age healthily permits. Consistent practice goals and body awareness are key as students learn how to harness their voice!
