Bachelor Degree: SUNY ESF
Hello! I am a young guitar teacher who can help you take steps towards your goals of performing, writing music, or simply being proficient at guitar or bass. If you feel like you're stuck with your playing, or are having trouble getting started, I have the tools to help you out! I encourage my students to learn songs that they enjoy and bring them to me for help and a thorough explanation of exactly what is happening in the song, so you can learn the intricacies of the song instead of only knowing how to play it. I also encourage them to work on their own songs and riffs and bring them to me so we can work on them together.
I've been playing guitar and bass for over 10 years, and have been teaching since 2020. I have experience writing and performing songs in rock and jazz bands, as well as experience recording music in professional studios and in my own DIY recording space. I have experience teaching absolute beginners as well as intermediate players learn different aspects of guitar such as: new chords, scales, navigating the fret board, improvisation, learning songs by ear, and song writing. I have knowledge of music theory and can help you apply it to your playing instead of simply memorizing concepts without actually learning how to use them.
For all students, I begin with asking them to show me what they already know, and to explain to me where they want to take their playing and what their goals for the future are. I then design a curriculum unique to each student's interests and needs to keep them engaged and having fun. For beginner students I like to emphasize fundamentals through playing simple and recognizable chords and riffs instead of only focusing on exercises, which can makes students bored and discourage them. For all students I try to stay as involved as possible, playing along with them as I can instead of intensely observing, which I have found to be detrimental to a students progression.
I believe that the overarching goal of music is not to become "successful" or to become a virtuoso, but to bring joy into your own life. This is why I create a unique curriculum for each student that is designed to meet their wants and needs as musicians. For example: if the goal of a student is to become a guitarist in a performing band that creates original music, I will emphasize song writing, improvisation, and ear training that is required to become that type of musician. But if a student's goal is to become proficient enough to learn their favorite songs in their bedroom, I will focus on practical chords for learning songs as well as learning to read chord charts and understanding patterns in many songs that will help them learn songs more efficiently.
