I am a drummer and guitarist who cares about the success of anyone that I work with and can not wait to join with you in this part of your journey as a musician. I have played and studied both guitar and drums for 20 years. My education included extensive music theory as well as training in percussion, to which I attribute my growth as a guitarist and drummer. I have played in symphonic, rock and jazz ensembles as well as with contemporary worship teams. I currently write and record my own music as well as for clients.
My teaching experience includes teaching full bands at the junior high level as well as beginner percussion students. I have also taught private lessons in my personal studio for both beginner and intermediate levels. I love to inspire my students to practice as much as they can, but consistency and structure is the most important thing. I want my students to have fun and to be intrinsically motivated to achieve their goals as musicians and to play the music that they want to play. It is always a great moment when something just clicks in the student's mind that propels them forward to the next step in their musical journey.
One of my philosophies on learning any instrument is that anyone can do it, talent is optional. If you want it, you can do it. It just takes motivation, determination, consistent practice and encouragement from others to help you on the way. Do not let the thought that you are not musically inclined or talented deter you from starting to learn an instrument. See below for information about how I approach guitar and drum lessons. GUITAR For beginner guitar students who are children, I will start working with them out of the Hal Leonard's Guitar Method books. As early as I can I want them to be able to play simple melodies of songs that they recognize so they can see that they can do this and it will just get more fun along the way! For beginner, adult guitar students, I like to know what kind of music they are interested in learning and gearing everything in that direction. DRUMS For children, beginner drummers, we will start with the Hal Leonard Drumset Method books. Starting out by reading, or learning to read sheet music will help the student in the years to come, even if they stop reading sheet music at some point. (Though I recommend keeping it up!) For beginner adult drummers, we will gear their lessons towards the music that they are interested in playing, but at the same time branching out and learning some other essential styles that will help their overall growth as a drummer. For intermediate drummers, we will hone in on more details such as techniques, more complex rhythm, and explore other styles to help round out their abilities as a musician. This will vary from student to student.
Music is fun. The only reason to start learning an instrument is so you can have fun while learning, because you never stop learning. While I have certain processes while teaching, lessons will be tailored to the student. We will make sure to take note of progress so the student can see where they were when they started compared to what they can do now. I will use a lot of practical examples so the student can see the principles we are learning and practicing being used in a live situation, i.e. other professional musician performances on video and/or audio. Listening will be a part of my "homework" I give to my students. I don't want to just grow guitar players or drummers, I want to grow musicians.
