Overview:
I began my musical journey at the age of eleven when I received my first set of drums. Throughout middle school and high school, I actively participated in bands. During my senior year of high school, I won a full scholarship to Louisiana State University to study percussion performance. After graduating with a Bachelors in Music, I taught and performed music throughout the south and southwest, from New Orleans to Austin. In 2016, I was awarded a teaching assistantship at the University of Washington in Seattle. I am currently finishing my Masters in Jazz Studies. When I'm not playing music, I enjoy cycling, single-origin coffee, and watching great films.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching privately for the past 8 years. I began teaching private lessons shortly after enrolling at LSU teaching through the university's performing arts academy. After graduating, I began teaching group percussion lessons with the non-profit organization Kids' Orchestra and also teaching general music at Victory Christian Academy. During my time with Kids' Orchestra I was able to encourage a passion for music in young students from the inner-city who would not have been able to afford music lessons. One of my greatest accomplishments during my time with Kid's Orchestra was writing music that engaged my students and made reading music fun for them! In 2015, I moved to Austin, TX and taught private piano and drum instruction. I am always excited to meet new students and help them along with their musical journey.
METHODS USED
For my beginning drum students, I use Mark Wessels "A Fresh Approach to the Snare Drum and Drum Set", Rod Morganstein's "drum set musician", and Mitchell Peters' "Developing Dexterity". For students that have a good grasp of the basics, I work through material that caters to their specific interests (jazz, rock, latin, West-African, orchestral/school band, or marching percussion). I also write original etudes for my students based on their needs and include a midi accompaniment to motivate students to work on their assigned material. Finally, I engage my students by working through relevant songs or pieces of music.
LESSON STYLE
With each lesson, my main goal is to provide an atmosphere that is engaging and to cater to each student's needs. At the end of the day, I want to see my students not only grow in musicianship and technical skills, but also in their love and appreciation for music. While I primarily teach through method books and other pre-existing teaching material, I individualize my approach to each student because I understand everyone has a different way of learning. This individualized approach has proven successful over the years and I have greatly enjoyed helping students achieve their specific goals. I believe that learning should be fun and I always aim to provide methods that motivate students across the spectrum of experience, from beginners to seasoned players.
