BA, The Evergreen State College, Performing and Visual Arts
Overview:
Music is a very personal form of expression. There are many different ways of learning, teaching and practicing. My forte is getting a student on their feet quickly so they maintain interest and build confidence. Students need to learn the fundamentals of the “language” so they have the ability to communicate with other musicians and learn from other players. I studied music and performance in college. My senior thesis was based around writing songs that conveyed a cohesive message and thought. My music has taken me all over the country and parts of Europe and Canada. I write and perform original music and teach the principles behind harnessing creative thought.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching guitar and guitar theory since I was in college. I believe that with hard work everyone can perform at a unique level. I incorporate other instruments into my lessons so students can see how a piece translates or transforms. Understanding the fundamentals of hearing music can teach more than any scale or chord book. If a student is having difficulty with a particular lesson, I redirect. I give the student the knowledge they need to find the shortcut or develop the magic involved in playing.
METHODS USED
Music is hard. It is a language that needs to be learned so that it can be reproduced and communicated. It takes memory, dedication and repetition. Students have to love the practice. They have to find an interest beyond wanting to be famous. I teach my students that music is for them. It is something that cannot be taken away. People who don’t play believe it has a mystique. I teach that you can build musicianship. It is tangible. It is within reach. It is possible to unlock an ability that will surprise yourself.
LESSON STYLE
I teach in a fun but realistic format. You must memorize and you must want to learn. You can reproduce any piece of music. You can play it backwards or even blow it out sideways. But without the passion to learn it can also be tedious and painful. It’s hard work. So my format is getting the student up and running. Get them to the level where they can get one song down. This sense of satisfaction will pull and push them through the tough times. Every musician wonders “why am I doing this again?”. Especially when it feels impossible to catch someone else’s ear or attention. My philosophy is learn it for yourself and let your expression follow.
