Hi there! I’m Matt H., a guitar and piano teacher in Watertown, Massachusetts. I was mostly self-taught growing up, playing around on instruments and making music on my computer, before formally studying music at Bennington College where I focused on composition and earned scholarships as a top music student. Since then I’ve played guitar, piano, and even a little mandolin in various bands and projects in the Boston area. After a few years I started to focus more on teaching while starting a family and spending some time as a stay-at-home dad.
I've been teaching for 10+ years now. I work mostly with beginner to intermediate adults and particularly enjoy someone discovering they can learn an instrument later in life. I love helping someone learn their first song as much as helping them work their way up to a “holy grail” song. I've helped a mother play a classical piece to accompany her son at a recital. I've helped someone finally nail the songs they spent 50 years trying to play well. I've helped a young man learn songs from each of the countries he's traveled to (including some reggae, German punk, and Belgian piano songs arranged for guitar). I love engaging with people in their unique musical journey!
I work to custom-tailor my lessons for each individual student based on their skill level and musical tastes (my main areas of focus for guitar are in the pop/rock/folk/indie genres ranging back to the 60’s up to current music and classical/pop/electronic for piano/keys). I believe the best way to learn music is to play music that excites you. I teach everything from technique to theory using the student’s favorite songs and adjusting them as needed. To get good at music you need to practice. Wouldn’t you like to spend that time repeatedly playing something you actually like?
I keep my lessons low pressure and laid back. This is a fun hobby for my students and I try to keep it that way! At the same time, I work with the student to set goals to keep them accountable and making progress. I don't make students perform in front of anybody else unless that is a goal of theirs to work towards. Depending on the student's level, having me playing along with them at times is also something I use to help the student feel more comfortable. Plus it's fun, especially when we play along with the recording of their favorite song!
