ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
Bachelor Degree: College Lionel-Groulx
Overview:

Matt has traveled extensively, both performing and instructing on drums. At various times he has also been a percussionist, a dancer, a singer (including throat singing, beatboxing & voiceover), a composer and an actor (TVA, Radio-Canada TV, TQS TV, Vrak TV, Radio- Quebec TV). Matt’s experience is not just confined to performing; he is equally at home with the creative process. Matt’s talent, versatility, and unique ‘feel’ have made him a standout performer in Montreal and Los Angeles music communities, where he is known for his remarkable creativity and his magnetic on-stage presence. His musical journey began with many years of piano studies. At 15, he discovered the drums and quickly developed the passion that led him to enroll in the Jazz and Popular Music program at College Lionel Groulx (renowned college). Matt also studied the slide trombone for five years while playing in the military. He has had the pleasure of performing with Cirque du Soleil (dancer, actor, and percussionist on Solstrom, throat singer, and other voices on Zed, creation work with Alain Vinet). He performed at the Jazz Fest, Francopholies, Parc des Iles. He was also a singer, dancer, and percussionist for “Beat” (La fiesta mondiale de percussion) which toured in casinos and venues across North America. He has also recorded and performed drums with many well-known artists in Canada. Among others, Matt was a member of the popular Montreal band Redcore (drums, composer, and vocals) and played drums with the up-and-coming Los Angeles-based bands U.G.L.Y (Chris Brown Entertainment), Standing Shadows, Erick Morillo, and CB7 (drums and back vocals) who just came back from opening for 30 Seconds To Mars on their US tour. In addition, Matt has also worked with big companies like RipTide Music, Immediate Music and corporations like Coca Cola, McDonalds and Toyota, to help them build promotional and sponsored shows. When he’s not producing music at home or in different studios Matt stays in the creative process for different artists like MOON (facebook.com/wethemoon), Beatnik Jr (beatnikjr.com), Open Source Rebellion (facebook.com/OpenSourceRebellion). Matt has also been producing for BMG and other companies and different artists. One of his recent production called “Detonate (Original Mix) –DJ Rap” was on numerous Beatport and Trackitdown top five lists. He is currently playing with the Los Angeles band State To State and finishing to coproduced and record the upcoming Bran Van 3000 (being mixed by Mick Guzauski) album, on which he has the chance to play with Abraham Laboriel, Tim Pierce, Kim Bullard, Nick Mancini and other legendary musicians. "What first caught my attention about Matt was his ability to play a complicated pattern but still keep the groove going. I like watching drummers incorporate their own personality into playing, separating them from the rest of the pack." -Shannon Leto (30 Seconds to Mars) ”Matt reminds me of Mitch Mitchell.” -Mark Hudson (record producer, musician and songwriter) "He’s an amazingly solid and tight drummer!" -Tony Royster Jr. (Jay-Z, DW - Drum Workshop) "He reminds us of Magella Cormier (James Gelfand and many others) and blow our mind with an incredible musicality!" -Jacques Masson (Oliver Jones, Montreal Drumfest, Premier Drums) and Dany Richard "He’s a very talented guy and super pleasant to work with." -Ange E. Curcio orey Heart, Celine ion, Eric Lapointe, Montreal Drumfest, Pearl Drums)

EXPERIENCE

I've been teaching for several years since I got out of College and it's been a rewarding experience. I love witnessing my students make progress and evolve. I love to feel and share their passion for music. I do like to have a program to ensure constant progress but I do not mind at all adapting, changing, or not following at all the program depending on the student's demands and goals. The main goal is to first have fun! If we don't have fun while learning it makes the process harder and kind of pointless.

METHODS USED

From Newbreed to Chapin to Afro-Cuban Rhythm for drum set, there are many methods that are worth exploring. That being said, sometimes learning songs (covers) can be the best way to learn quickly and it can be a lot of fun. Something I've done many times too is writing precise exercises for students in order to address and target specific needs. Let's say a student has difficulty with his ghost notes on his/her left hand, I can easily come up with fun exercises in order to speed up the progress and get improvements for that student.

LESSON STYLE

To witness students making progress and share their passion for music is quite rewarding. I love to see how teaching music can also affect students in their personal lives. Some teaching methods can be translated to everyday life challenges. From my experience, learning an instrument or music, in general, can help tremendously to deal with day-to-day struggles or even mental state. It can help to deal with depression or ease some pain related to difficulties in their personal lives. Music is the best therapy!

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
