Overview:
I am a fun but hardworking instructor who strives to find the prefect balance between playing music for enjoyment and practicing hard. I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music, concentration in Jazz Performance, and American Studies, concentration in Jazz Studies. While at UNC Chapel Hill, I played in several groups such as the UNC Jazz Big Band, Charanga Carolina, and the UNC Guitar Ensemble. While my formal studies lie in jazz, I have also played in several rock and funk groups over the past eight years. I recently received an M.A in Jazz Studies from George Washington University, and I currently tour and record with different bands based in the Atlanta area. I love passing on my acquired knowledge as a musician to new and enthusiastic students.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching private guitar lessons for the past eight years in person as well as remotely over different streaming platforms. I have experience working with students of all ages and playing abilities, and I have taught lessons in jazz, rock, bluegrass, country, folk, funk, and more. I pride myself in my adaptability as a musician, able to play and teach in many different genres and styles. My number one goal as a teacher is to help students become well versed in the kind of music that they are most drawn to, so that playing guitar becomes a fun and inspiring activity.
METHODS USED
am a firm believer in adapting my teaching methods in order fit with each individual student. I think that all students have a genre or playing style that inspires them most, and I strive to find that style and to teach through it. I allow technical exercises and theory to come out of a specific style or genre, because I feel that this is the best way to keep students engaged and interested in the material. In short, I teach to the student and never force anyone to learn material or genres that do not inspire them musically.
LESSON STYLE
I like to keep the mood lighthearted and fun while I am teaching, so that all students will feel comfortable and play to the best of their abilities. I do, however, believe in the importance of consistent and concentrated practice, and I will always tell a student if I feel that they are not putting enough work into their instrument. Because I know that people have busy schedules, I strive to teach students how to practice efficiently so that they can improve their playing even if they have limited time in the day in which to practice. I believe that the best way to learn music is to find ways to make practicing an instrument a fun and enjoyable endeavor.
