Overview:
My name is Matt and I a professional musician, composer and music educator. I lived, studied and performed in Philadelphia for six years while earning my Bachelors Degree in Instrumental Performance and Masters Degree in Jazz Studies from the University of the Arts. My primary instrument is the upright and electric bass and I currently perform with multiple groups ranging in styles from jazz to rock. In addition to performing professionally, I am an Adjunct Professor and teach private lessons in bass, piano, drums and guitar at multiple music schools.
EXPERIENCE
I started teaching private music lessons 10 years ago before I attended college. Throughout college and after, I progressed and improved greatly as a musician, teacher and person. I like teaching people of all ages and backgrounds and feel this mindset in paramount in me improving as an educator and overall communicator. I have experience teaching students from kindergarten to college to grown adults. Teaching a wide range of ages has allowed me to be able to communicate and teach these different generations of students.
METHODS USED
I always start with the absolute foundation and fundamentals of music. I find when I start teaching students that have taken lessons previously, there are many holes in their understanding of their respective instrument and understanding of music in general. Consistency and steady progression is vital. What method books I recommend vary depending on the instrument and will be discussed prior to the first lesson. I encourage all students to come prepared with pencils, folder, staff paper and approved method book. This is very important for constant improvement.
LESSON STYLE
My style of teaching is very much influenced by my amazing professors that I studied with in college. What I find most rewarding is when I teach students that truly practice and try their very best to improve and absorb the information. When the students' passion and thirst for improvement comes through to me it makes the lessons that much more engaging and fun. I am highly encouraging and very particular with practice routine, planning and structure. I believe an organized, focused and motivated student is a successful student.
