Indiana University String Academy, Substitute Cello Instructor, 2015
Darlington Arts Center, Teaching Artist, 2016
Overview:
I received my Master’s degree from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, studying with former LA Philharmonic Principal cellist Peter Stumpf, and my bachelor’s degree at Temple University, studying with cellist Jeffrey Solow. As a chamber musician, I have studied with Menahem Pressler, Mark Kaplan, Jorja Fleezanis, and Kurt Muroki. Other studies include masterclasses with Fred Sherry, Colin Carr, Tokyo String Quartet, St. Lawerence String Quartet, and Ben Zander. As an orchestral musician, I have been a section member of Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra, and the Indiana University Philharmonic Orchestra. A strong advocate for music education, I studied pedagogy under Susan Moses and Mimi Zweig at the IU String academy, and have taught for Professor Moses on many occasions. This January I have also joined the faculty of Darlington Arts Center.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience began while studying at Indiana University, as I had the incredible opportunity to study pedagogy under Susan Moses and Mimi Zweig. There I was able to develop my skills as a teacher, and nurture my passion for education. I am a firm believer that given an encouraging environment and repetitions, any student can succeed in anything! From the beginning, I instill an awareness that cello playing must incorporate the most natural physical motions to play with beautiful tone and ease. My students are encouraged to enter competitions and recitals. Performance opportunities are an invaluable part of music education, teaching preparation, musical fluency, and confidence.
METHODS USED
For early students, I typically start with the Suzuki books, as I like the organized technical and musical progression of each piece. As the students develop I begin to add supplimentary materials such as etude and scale books. Students can progress from open strings to Bach with ease. More advanced students can expect a healthy dose of scales, Popper etudes, concertos, and Bach.
LESSON STYLE
There is nothing I love more than to see students succeed, and develop a passion and understanding for music. My goal is to create a productive and encouraging work environment, where students can be motivated and feel capable to succeed to their desired level. I would love to work with you, and make you in to the best cellist you can be!
