2006 - International TEFL Teacher Training (Teaching English as a Second Language)
Overview:
Konnichiwa! It's Kopi here (you may choose to call me Matt :-) I look forward to potentially working with you, whether you haven't established yourself as a musician yet, or if you consider yourself quite cutting-edge. All styles are present in our lessons according to your wishes and desires, from Rock to Latin Jazz and all styles in between. I teach guitar, drum set, latin percussion, and bass guitar and have studied with graduates of the Music Institute (Hollywood), Berklee School of Music, the Players School of Music and more. Take lessons with me for fun/pleasure and/or to stay competitive in this ever changing world of Music.
EXPERIENCE
I come from a family of teachers; my mother and father were teachers, my sister, and more. I myself began serving as a TA (Teachers Assistant) for 2 separate UCF Professors of Psychology, teaching lecture classes, doing online grading and more. All the while I was teaching private guitar lessons studying at UCF, Orlando. Substitute Teaching in the Public School System circa 2005 succeeded that, and I transitioned into teaching English in the Japanese Public School system next! I know! Random! I played in a punk rock band, and was coaxed into touring Japan instead of pursuing my Psychology Career (post graduation from UCF, Orlando). I love Japan so much that I returned for four years to teach! I managed to teach guitar, drum, latin percussion and bass lessons alongside all of this, since 2000, so it's been an enjoyable journey and I wouldn't trade it for the world!
METHODS USED
For those students who love to forge ahead, I use HARMONY AND THEORY. I don't tend to start out teaching how to read music, but if suggested/desired, I'm aok w/ the notion. I focus on chord tones, diatonic, symmetrical and other scales, syncopation/rhythms, the clave in Latin Music, the metronome, jazz chords vs other chords and more. Drumming wise I use the book STICK CONTROL, and for more advanced students I use an Ed Uribe book about Afro-Cuban styles ... I feel that book takes one to a much higher level!
LESSON STYLE
I focus on the student's preferred genre and songs, and I make theory work for those particular songs; i.e. I find common chord progressions, their related scales, and have students improvise using those scales [though I emphasize chord tones, syncopation and more ... equally, not just scales]). I am the epitome of patience, and I always seek to reassess a student's goals so as to hit the target as ideally on as possible (no sense in learning the complexity of jazz when punk rock is your only love!).
