BS in Interdiscplinary Studies with a concentration in Music Education
Awards:
1999 John Phillip Sousa Top Bandsman Award
Overview:
I have been playing saxophone for almost 30 years. I started in the 5th grade and instantly fell in love with the sax. In the seventh grade, I found a new love, the violin. After only a year of playing, I obtained the status of concert master. I continued both through high school and in the ninth grade I added the bassoon to my list of insturments. I graduated from Norfolk State University in 2006, majoring in both the saxophone and bassoon. I have several years of group and individual instruction and I am looking forward to sharing my experiences with you.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experiences began in college as a sectional leader in my marching band. During my final semester of college I began working at a local music store as a private saxophone instructor. Later in 2006, I started also working with a local high school marching band. These were some of the happiest moments of my life as I got to watch my students grow in their music. Currently I am a band leader of a popular group called Furioso. We primarily focus on Neo-Soul, Smooth Jazz, RnB, Hip Hop, Pop, and Gospel.
METHODS USED
I use traditional and self developed techniques for instruction. I am very flexible with my teaching styles and am very patient with new students. I use method books and audio and visual aids. I teach both reading music with theory and ear training. I require that all students are able to master all major and minor scales, which I have developed a very simple to learn method to achieve this goal with a 100% success rate. From there, I will teach how to actually analyze the music, and not just to play the notes on the paper.
LESSON STYLE
I take extreme care in making sure the student is first and foremost having fun. I make sure the student fully understands everything that is expected of them, and will instill a strong sense pride in my students success. I adapt to the students speed and believe genuine encouragement will get the best results out of them at all times. I also like to involve the family members in the lessons as well, sometimes with the student giving them a living room concert, or as I have been able to do in the past, a duet with the student parent.
