I'm a passionate and dedicated instructor who loves cultivating and sharing my love for music with others. I am currently a student at Brigham Young University studying psychology. I am the founder and director of the Timp Musicians performing group, and I have a great love for composing, arranging, and performing original works for the piano, instrument ensembles, and choirs. Outside of music, I love volleyball (and all things sports), anything outside (especially hiking), reading, and psychology.
I fell in love with teaching the piano during my freshman year of high school. That was 8 years ago, and I have been teaching consistently from my home studio and online ever since then. I have found that there is a fine balance to be struck between structure and curiosity in helping a student cultivate their love for music. I make a point to help my students create consistent practice schedules while allowing them space to play with and explore the piano. I have found great satisfaction and enjoyment in seeing my students grow and progress.
For beginning students who are children, I typically start out with the Faber method books. Once they begin to grasp the fundamentals, I begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate to their interest and skill level. For adults, I cater my instruction and choice of repertoire to their interests and ability, creating engaging, satisfying, and enjoyable lessons for students of any skill level. I typically introduce theory concepts early on, giving the student the musical foundation they need to learn and create independently.
I love seeing my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it is important that each student is allowed space to be curious and creative as well as have enough structure to know how to continue forward. Together, we will make realistic goals for the week at the end of each lesson according to the needs, interests, and availability of each student. I will make a concerted effort to acknowledge accomplishment and create motivating meaningful performance opportunities. As I get to know my students, I strive to cater my instruction to their wants and needs.
Matthew is by far the best piano teacher that I've ever had. Being an advanced piano player myself, I didn't even think I needed a piano teacher. I was way off. Matthew has completely changed the way I play the piano. He has enabled me to put all my emotion into my music through certain techniques that I didn't even know existed. Sometimes those techniques sound a little weird but they make all the difference in every song. I thought I knew a lot about the piano but man, Matthew knows so much more.
Matt is the most patient and humble piano teacher. His teaching is so beneficial and in the most loving nature. He wants to see everyone succeed!!! You can see his love is so strong for the piano and this is definitely something he was made to do!
I was impressed by Matthews versatility and depth of knowledge. Before taking lessons from him, I had several years of experience with the cello. When I first began, he did a great job of figuring out what I knew and what I didn’t. He then helped me fill in any gaps in my musical education. He is also a really solid and kind dude. Every lesson I had from him was always a positive experience. This guy really loves his job!
