Overview:
Hi, I'm Matt! I've been teaching music for over 10 years and I absolutely love doing it! I started to play the guitar when I was 12 years old and have been actively teaching and performing since I was 16 years old. I've performed as a solo artist playing Classical, Jazz, Rock, Blues, Country, and Original music and I've played in various groups including a live Tango band and an acoustic duo. I graduated from the University of Oregon with a Bachelors of Music in Performance. My specialty, if I had to choose, would be solo fingerstyle acoustic guitar, but I am well versed in Rock, Blues, Country, Jazz, Folk, and Gospel and I am willing and ready to brush up on anything my students may be interested. In addition to playing guitar, I play the Ukulele, Bass Guitar, Drums, Harmonica, Mandolin, Piano, and I sing as well as write my own songs.
EXPERIENCE
I've been teaching guitar from the time I got my driver's license at 16 years old. Throughout my teens and my college years I worked as a freelancer, teaching students in their homes. After college I spent several summers teaching group lessons at a family summer resort as well as spending some time teaching in a guitar shop in Los Angeles. These days I teach students locally in Southern Oregon as well as students all around the world through Skype! The biggest thing that my experience has taught me is that no two students are alike, and everyone learns in their own way.
METHODS USED
I firmly believe that every student is different and deserves their own personalized lesson experience. I do my best to get an understanding of what a student's musical interests and goals are tailor their lessons towards those goals. I teach lots of songs, because that's what we want to play! I also do my best to make sure you understand WHAT you are playing so that you can take elements of one song and know how to re-use them later. Students who are interested are given the opportunity to learn to read music, a very underrated skill in my opinion. I also generally like to teach out of my book, The Guitar Theory Workbook, which teaches music theory in a fun and easy way and also is a resource for all sorts of scales, chord shapes, and arpeggios that I teach most students.
LESSON STYLE
Your lessons are about what YOU want! My goal is to keep lessons fun and interesting while helping you achieve your goals. I rarely give technical exercises, instead I like to give students songs that they enjoy which will challenge them and keep them moving forward. Lessons are not regimented, but loosely planned. I always make sure to give my students the opportunity to ask questions about anything, even if it's not related to what we're studying at the moment. My students are welcome to contact me anytime via email, and I will gladly answer any questions they have. For online students I use a file-sharing service so we can quickly and easily exchange song charts and other documents, as well as videos I record so they can re-watch important parts of the lessons.

Matt has been teaching me for well over a year now, and my guitar playing has improved significantly in the time he has taught me. He is an awesome teacher and great at explaining things, especially music theory. I can't recommend his lessons enough!

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm.
