2015 - Fort Lewis College Music Department Scholarship
Overview:
My name is Matt and I'm a local to the Denver area. I studied Art and Music at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado where I graduated with a minor in music. I love working with students and have learned a lot over the years of taking lessons myself that I wish to share with those who have an interest in music. I've been playing flute for over 15 years and have played in many groups and ensembles. Two of some of the more special performances include a performance with the Fort Lewis College Symphonic Band at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs in 2014, and performing in the United Kingdom in 2009 for their New Year's Day parade.
EXPERIENCE
I've been playing flute for over 15 years and have taken advanced private lessons myself for over 8 years. In my own journey as a musician, I've realized the importance of regular practice time and setting short and long term goals. In my time teaching younger students, I've learned that locking down the basics of tone and breath control are crucial techniques for becoming a great musician. It's also important to have a good mix of repertoire between classical and modern/pop pieces. Being excited about a specific piece of music goes a long way into fueling a student's desire to becoming a great player. My ultimate goal is to foster a love and appreciation for music in my students and to drive home the point that although it takes patience and hard work to learn how to play an instrument, the process should be fun and exciting!
METHODS USED
At the start of the lesson, I will emphasize tone and air control which I've found makes a huge difference as a warm up. The primary books I will work out of are Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. As students progress and I feel that they have a handle on the basics, I will slowly start to incorporate other repertoire that will be exciting to play and perform. Also, it's never too early to start teaching scales and having students memorize them which will greatly help and improve their technical ability.
LESSON STYLE
Having patience is key to being a good teacher. I realize many students will learn at different paces so it's important to work with kids on an individual level to make sure they're learning most effectively. Positive reinforcement through encouragement and setting attainable goals is another way of ensuring my students are making progress. I want to relate to students on a personal level as well and to link what their passionate about with the music that I teach them. Many issues that young musicians struggle with in the first few years of playing often can be attributed with bad habits they may have unconsciously picked up from the beginning. My job as an instructor is to identify and correct those potential issues before they become habits in order to set my students up for the highest level of success.
