I am an instructor that is passionate about spreading the love of music and the joy of performing with all of my students. In 2016 I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music education with a focus on saxophone performance, I also achieved a jazz studies minor with my degree. As a musician I have had the opportunity to travel and play all over the United States, as well perform with many great musicians such as; Kenni Holmen, Jeff Coffin, Steve Wiest, and Allen Vizzutti.
I began teaching during my sophomore year of college. I have had the opportunity to instruct all ranges of age groups as well as different sizes of ensembles. I emphasize the importance of regular practice routines with my students, as it leads them to better understand what they need to improve upon as well as helps me to help them achieve the goals they are wishing to reach in their playing. I find that combining all styles of music from classical to jazz helps students to become better rounded musicians.
I begin by first, of course, meeting with the students and talking to them and learning what they wish to achieve from their lessons with me as well as their level of playing at that current moment. After this first initial meeting and lesson I begin to help the student improve, working with them to achieve higher standards of performance at his or her own pace. If the student is young or playing at a beginner level we will start with the foundation of playing; the basics of saxophone. From this point on I will begin to introduce the student to repertoire appropriate for their playing level that will help them to develop their abilities as a performer. For older or more experienced students I attempt to find out what they are interested in and alter my instruction from there to help them improve and achieve their own goals.
I believe that it is important that every student progresses at their own individual pace; but I also believe that it is the goal of every student to have fun at what they're doing. Music is meant to be fun! I encourage my students to play to the best of their abilities at each lesson, and I acknowledge their achievements so that they can take pride in the progress they have made during our lessons. I strive to set the best example for my students, as well as help them to become the best musician that they can while at the same time having fun and loving music.
