I am a passionate bass vocalist who has had the fortune of performing around the country with opera companies such as Wolf Trap Opera, Philadelphia Opera, and Michigan Opera Theatre. Throughout my travels, I have learned and seen what it takes to be a truly great opera singer. I take this discipline in performance and travel to my career as an educator. As your instructor, I would first listen to what makes your voice truly magnificent. Then, I would use my education to enhance what you naturally can do.
I started my teaching experience as a student teacher of general music at the Masterman School of Philadelphia. It was there that I realized I had a need to engage in education further and started to teach privately while attending university. My teaching focus has always been on enhancing a natural instrument that we all possess. Each of us knows how to speak. Therefore, we all have the potential to learn the projection of sound through music. My goal as your teacher is to help bring that natural voice to the forefront of your singing in any genre. Music is an art form of internal expression. I want to make sure that you are expressing yourself in the healthiest and easiest way possible so that the music can speak louder than the workings of your technique. If nobody knows you are working hard, you're doing it right!
For younger students, I tend to focus on the production of breath and basic sounds as they begin to grow into their body. This is to ensure that the baseline technique is there as they find how their instrument, the voice, is growing into their developing selves. For adult students of any technique, I prefer to start with basic vocal exercises to test the agility and flexibility of the voice so that I have an understanding of how their matured voice functions. Then, I begin to introduce repertoire that reinforces what I know their voice can do while stretching its potential. This can be in any genre of their choosing. From there, I begin to let my students of any age choose repertoire in coordination with my guidance so that we can work on things that they are truly passionate about.
I believe that each student needs to set their own goals and therefore I like to go at the pace my students prefer. While I am happy to help set some basic goals and will assign work to do outside of our lessons, I believe that long term goals are our own. Therefore, if you are getting ready for college auditions or simply improving your singing so that you can share your music with loved ones, I will go at the pace required by your goals. That being said, I also am not strictly goal driven and love to have fun. Music is a community experience and we should be enjoying ourselves and laughing along the way as we begin making music.
