I'm a fairly new private lessons teacher finishing my Music Education/Composition Bachelor's degree. I have studied with some of the best flute and drumset players. I have performed many genres throughout my musical career. I have also played music for many different settings such as church, football, parades, celebrity shows, nonprofit organizations, rallys, and competitions. I am very excited to teach young and intermediate musicians new techniques, music theory, and methods of learning to play music effectively and joyfully.
I began teaching private lessons two years ago. I have taught about ten students in my life, and only taught them what they were specifically passionate about. I believe practicing is important, but I do not believe assigning homework is an effective way to make music fun for a student. Music is pointless without the will to learn and the desire to practice. Students will progress only as far they want to take their talents. With all of that being said, I look forward to teaching students how to learn and understand music, plus have the knowledge to make their own.
For those of you who are just picking up an instrument, I begin things by pointing out the parts of your instrument and how to maintain, assemble, repair, and clean your instrument. The next step is creating a pleasant sound on your instrument. After a sound can be played on the students instrument, I will use beginning books that I will provide the students, and my own music to help a student learn notes and rhythms. From there, the student has the option to take on solo repertoire or duets, and instrument accompaniments with other soloists.
I truly enjoy seeing a student progress and find a passion for playing music. Depending on a student's learning style and speed, my methods of teaching will change. Some students will want to be challenged, and I can take things very rapidly or focus on weaknesses and slow things down based on a student's skill level. There are so many ways to teach teach a student, and I am not subject to only one of those teaching styles. However, a student must want to learn in order to make progress on his or her instrument.
