I'm a professional drummer and educator of over 30 years experience in my field with a proven track recorded of helping students achieve their personal goals. I was lucky enough to have the privilege to study with some of the very best in the industry including: Steve Gadd (Eric Clapton / Simon and Garfunkel) Casey Scheuerell (Santana / Chaka Khan) , Joe Porcaro and Greg Bissonette to name a few. Following in the footsteps of my mentors, I truly feel that teaching is a privilege. My goal is simply to help you achieve, in the shortest amount time, an understanding of this amazing instrument so that you can utilize your passion for music to become the drummer you want to be.
I began teaching part time drum lessons back in 1988; I realized I had a knack for it. After graduating from music school - Musicians Institute in Hollywood CA, I continued to pursue my educational goals attending California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo. To support myself while in school I taught upwards of 40 students a week working for a local drum shop called The Drum Circuit. Four years later, I received a BA from Cal Poly. A I continued to teach in San Luis Obispo for another 13 years and I never looked back. Having relocated to the San Diego area in 2008 I've carried on doing what I love which bring me to you - today.
For younger students with no sight reading experience, I will typically start of with Ted Reed's book Syncopation. This book starts the student off with a very basic music notation vocabulary. This vocabulary is often quickly absorbed so that the student may proceed to more complicated musical words or phrases. Proficient sight reading skills are hugely important to the Drummer, as well as any other musician who will strive to succeed. For more experienced players, together we will review their current level of proficiency and based on their goals, plan out how we should proceed.
Nothing beats feeling the excitement provided by being in control of one the most powerful instruments created. For over 35 years, I've enjoyed this amazing experience not only as a recording artist but on stage performing live....I tell you, there is nothing like it. With this being said, it is my sincerest hope that I help my students achieve this same sense of joy and accomplishment - knowing and feeling that you have performed to the best of your ability and seek only to improve further. By using my years of experience I can efficiently custom taylor a lesson plan to my clients wants and needs.
For two months Matt has been teaching online with my son. He loves his lesson and is always excited to work on his assignments.
