I'm a passionate and dedicated music instructor with 10 years teaching and 15 years playing experience. I have toured extensively throughout Australia, the United States and Canada as a performing musician and songwriter in multiple acts, and have recorded in top studios in all 3 cities. I am degree educated in popular music and performance, and thoroughly enjoy bringing that wealth of musical knowledge and experience to every lesson I give. I can teach in students homes, or alternatively I enjoy teaching in my own Hollywood apartment studio.
I have been teaching music for 10 years. In that time I have taught in 3 major cities, or 2 continents both privately and through respected insitutions such as the Hollywood Academy of Music and Brooklyn Guitar School. During my most recent time in New York (over 2 years), I maintained a roster of 15-20 private weekly students, throughout the 5 boroughs. Working with different students from different backgrounds in multiple cities has greatly informed my teaching and stoked my passion for passing on my musical knowledge.
My main focus of teaching is on the student, and on developing and expanding their existing musical interests. I develop a lesson plan and schedule that begins with the musical interests and passions of the student, their favorite bands, favorite songs and musical styles. From there I take each of their favorite pieces of music and demonstrate how the building blocks of music were used to create each, and how they can not only recreate their favorites, but start to create their own musical identity. Different styles of music are explored, while always bringing it back to fundamental building blocks (scales, chords, rhythm and timing) and how each is used to create different moods, feelings and styles of musical expression.
I believe that motivation begins with excitement and there is no better way to help a student stick to a practice routine than teaching him or her to play their favorite songs. Of course, a knowledge of music theory is very important, but I always make sure that we don't get bogged down in minutia, and that each student is allowed to proceed at his or her own pace. A practical and usable knowledge of music's fundamentals is employed to get results and keep the student motivated and actively learning. As we get more advanced, more musical theory is explored in an effort to balance excitement with hard work and the satisfaction that comes with achieving goals and overcoming obstacles.
