I am a very enthusiastic and passionate instructor! I am a composer, song-writer, pianist, and guitarist. I have been writing, performing and producing music for well over a decade in addition to teaching. I am also an experienced singer, though I have had minimal formal training in this. I have been singing songs and fiddling on instruments for as long as I can remember. It wasn't until my adult life that I finally pursued a thorough education. As an analyst I developed a fascination with the science and theory of music and as an intuitive person with the raw mysteries of improvised playing. I have a degree in Music Composition with a focus in piano and guitar. I have been teaching ever since I developed my own understanding of Music Theory. I have always been fascinated with teaching music to others and developing new ways of understanding. It truly is a simple language and yet so mysterious to so many. It is my passion to show others the way to understanding music and it is an honor and an absolute joy to embark on this journey with anyone who is willing and ready to take it on.
I have been teaching music ever since I began to develop a formal education myself. I began by teaching anyone and everyone I could as early as my first year of college. I quickly figured out that anyone could really learn this stuff. I also realized that most people wanted to learn at some point, just never got around to it or stopped believing they could. It has always been my mission to reverse this kind of thinking for those who want it, and help people understand it is never too late to learn. I have written and performed music for orchestra, chamber musicians, recitals, films, and I have produced my own music as well. I have Been teaching piano and guitar for over a decade.
Naturally, my method will adapt to each student's needs. This will depend firstly on what style of music we are working to develop. Next, I will base my approach on the students level of abilities. There are a number of things to consider, such as technique, aural capacity, intuitive understanding, and basic theoretical knowledge, as well as each student's particular personality traits and best method of receiving information. I have a large repertoire of pedagogical literature and performance pieces. I also notate certain exercises myself.
This will vary given the student's abilities and particular intentions for study. In general, I focus on five distinct areas of learning: technique, theoretical understanding, reading, intuitive playing/learning by ear, and performance. I like to keep each lesson fluid and organized, by maintaining structure within segments of study. Within these segments we may venture into something unanticipated, so long as the student expresses interest, readiness, and the ability to learn. We will maintain weekly goals and assignments to assure progress and accomplishment.
