Copyist/Musician at MJ:The Musical on Broadway
Assistant Music Director world premiere musical Knoxville by Lynn Ahrens & Stephen Flaherty
I'm a passionate coach who loves to work with students on expanding their craft and love for music. A 2009 graduate of Berklee College of Music with a degree in Composition and Vocal Pedagogy, I've worked in musical theatre for the past 15 years. Notable credits include MJ:The Musical (Broadway - Winner of 4 Tonys and nominated for a Grammy), Knoxville (Asolo Rep - with Ahrens & Flaherty/Frank Galati - Nominated for a Grammy), Passing Through, Cyrano (Goodspeed Musicals), 42nd Street (Riverside theatre), In The Heights, Man of La Mancha (PCPA in California), Sweeney Todd (Ensemble Theatre - Santa Barbara, CA) among many others. I've had the please of working with top industry professionals including but not limited to Stephen Schwartz, Stephen Flaherty & Lynn Ahrens, Frank Galati, David Holcenberg, Jason Michael Webb, Christopher Wheeldon, Peter Dinklage, The National, Charles Strouse, Neil Bartram & Brian Hill, Thomas Murray, Josh Rhodes, and Rob Berman.
I have taught many students over the years, and much of my experience has taken place in a real world rehearsal room environment. With well over 100 productions under my belt I've worked with casts on learning music and shaping songs. As a still working professional this experience makes me highly suited to adjust and respond to every students needs, and meet them where they are in their development. Through crafting 1,000's of performances I can bring you real world application that will best prepare you to find the confidence you need to perform, whether as a hobby or professionally. The joy is in watching you realize your dreams.
The key to progress is a solid foundation. For all students I will focus on core techniques and practice habits - from there we will dive into repertoire. Through our discovery of what music elicits a passionate response we will tailor our work towards building a foundation that best fits each student. Materials will vary widely based on the students needs. I employ techniques such as the Jaques Dalcroze Method and the Alexander Technique - both of which are rooted in the physical aspects of playing music. Like going to the gym, these methods help train the body and the mind to overcome obstacles, tackle complex passages, and stay rooted in the present. These methods are suited for students of all skill levels.
Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! It is important that each student progresses at their own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson, acknowledging accomplishments, fueling a students desire to progress, and finding ways to stimulate a students desire to learn more. My style is adaptive to each student but overall I am conversational, goal oriented, and keen to explore the strengths and doubts of each student. Only through acknowledging our fears can we overcome our obstacles.
